Dear Members and Friends,

Last week, we had the privilege of hearing Rachel Wilkins speak on the topic of mentoring. Her presentation made me reflect on my 32 years of professional experience and the incredible mentors who have influenced my journey. Today, I want to take a moment to express my gratitude to two individuals who have profoundly impacted my life.

First, I must highlight Shevaun McNaughton, Marketing Director at Oculus. Without her interest in becoming both my friend and mentor in the industry, I’m not sure I would still be here today. Shevaun didn’t just selflessly offer her guidance; she became a dear friend and a constant source of support. Navigating the complexities of our industry—and leading marketing efforts without much direction—was challenging. But Shevaun always took my calls to guide me. Her encouragement and faith in my talents made a world of difference. I remember her saying she wasn’t as talented or knowledgeable in marketing as I was, but her gift for mentoring was truly extraordinary. Her impact on my life—and on many others—has been life-changing. Here’s to you, Shevaun, for your incredible kindness and influence.

Another mentor I must acknowledge is Michael Kennedy Sr. (founder of KAI Enterprises). Working for Mr. Kennedy was one of the best training grounds I could have asked for. He challenged me to think critically and creatively, often guiding me to find the answers rather than giving them outright. His mentorship shaped my design talents and helped me grow as a professional. Moreover, he allowed me the freedom to be myself and use my unique strengths to contribute to his company’s growth. I am deeply grateful for the four years I spent under his guidance and the many lessons I learned from him. Those experiences helped me become a better performer and leader and ultimately led me to take on other roles to continue to challenge me creatively and professionally.

Ultimately, I am incredibly thankful for these two mentors and the many others who have shaped my life. Now, we want to hear from you! Who are the mentors who have made a difference in your life? Share your stories with us. It’s inspiring to learn about the lasting impact of mentorship, and we’d love to showcase your gratitude.

Additionally, I’m thrilled to announce that SLC3 is developing a mentor/protégé program in collaboration with our Emerging Leaders group. If you’re interested in participating as either a mentor or mentee, please reach out to Lydia at Lydia@slc3.org. We’ll work to find the perfect match for you!

Finally, I want to remind our associate members who may be unsure about renewing their membership that now is the perfect time to be part of SLC3. Your membership comes with incredible benefits, including access to project opportunities, our Member Directory through the InfoHub, and discounted event pricing. We’re growing rapidly and providing exceptional programming to support your success. Last week’s fantastic Board meeting reaffirmed the exciting direction we’re heading in. Don’t miss out on the opportunities available to you—seize them today!

Thank you for your continued support. Let’s celebrate the power of mentorship and make the most of all that SLC3 has to offer.

Warm regards,

Kelly Jackson

Celebrating Mentorship: Insights from Rachel Rubin Wilkins

January is National Mentoring Month, a time to recognize the power of mentorship and the meaningful impact it has on our lives and communities. To kick off the year, we were honored to host Rachel Rubin Wilkins last week for an inspiring session highlighting the transformative role mentoring can play in personal and professional growth.

Rachel’s passion and expertise shone through as she shared valuable insights and actionable advice. Here are some key takeaways from her presentation:

  • 💡 Mentoring doesn’t always have to be formal—You can have a “silent mentor,” someone you admire from afar and learn from through observation.
  • 🤝 Networking as the foundation of mentoring—Authentic connections are the gateway to transformative mentoring relationships.
  • 💬 Mentor/mentee relationships reduce loneliness—They foster belonging, provide career solutions, and create a sense of shared purpose.

Rachel reminded us that mentoring isn’t just about career development; it’s about building bridges of hope and opportunity. In her words, “Together, we can bring hope and opportunity—one relationship at a time.”

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Rachel, for sharing her wisdom and passion with us. A special thank you to our Women’s Leadership Sponsor, SERVPRO of West Kirkwood and Sunset Hills, Jan Mullaney, and Kristie Gabel, for making this event possible.

As we move forward into the year, let’s commit to empowering ourselves and others through genuine connection and authentic leadership. Together, we can create a brighter future for all!

Clayco's New CEO, Anthony Johnson, Expects Data Center Boom to Thrive

Anthony Johnson discusses the firm’s new data center unit, the challenges of hyperscale construction and how the company plans to lead in an increasingly competitive market.

When he joined the Midwest’s largest contractor 17 years ago, Anthony Johnson thought the move to Clayco’s St. Louis office would be temporary — a five-year stop before returning to Minnesota.

Instead, the energy and excitement of the organization turned five years into nearly two decades, a tenure during which Johnson helped drive Clayco’s growth into a leader in advanced manufacturing and data center construction.

Now, close to 20 years later, Johnson has taken the helm as CEO of Chicago-based Clayco.

His move to the top role aligns with the launch of Clayco Compute, a dedicated business unit focused on high-tech construction projects. The new division positions Clayco firmly within the advanced technology construction sector, including the ongoing data center construction boom.

That boom shows no signs of slowing. For example, a joint venture among OpenAI, Softbank and Oracle announced a $500 billion initiative at the White House on Tuesday to accelerate AI infrastructure development. The plan includes the construction of up to 20 data centers by 2028.

Here, Johnson talks with Construction Dive about the vision behind Clayco Compute, challenges in hyperscale facility construction and how the company plans to lead in an increasingly competitive market.

CONSTRUCTION DIVE: How does the launch of Clayco Compute help build on the firm’s work in advanced technology construction?

ANTHONY JOHNSON: We are already a top five builder of data centers in the U.S., with 57 active projects nationwide with the largest hyperscale and tech companies. In 2024 alone, our data center projects generated $3.6 billion in revenue, which accounted for half of our total revenue last year and was more than double the revenue we generated from data center construction in 2023. And we anticipate revenue from data center construction to reach over $4.6 billion by 2026, so we are clearly talking about a high growth, high potential, extremely competitive sector.

The hyperscale data center market is projected to grow 10% to 20% annually in the next five years, and at Clayco, many of the projects in our pipeline for 2025 are mission critical, technical projects like hyperscale data centers, quantum computing and advanced manufacturing facilities.

Establishing Clayco Compute as a dedicated business unit allows us to both be hyper-focused on these types of projects while differentiating ourselves in terms of the unique expertise and services that we bring to clients.

What led to the decision to establish Clayco Compute as a dedicated business unit rather than continuing advanced technological construction within the existing structure?

As much as we’ve already worked in the data center and quantum computing space, there’s still a tremendous amount of opportunity for us to build both in terms of projects and as an organization in this sector. We like to lean into markets like advanced technological construction where we can differentiate ourselves, and the launch of Clayco Compute is our first step towards that.

Our vertically integrated platform is what really sets Clayco Compute apart and provides clients with enhanced capabilities that our competitors simply don’t have. Clayco Compute offers a turnkey, full-service design-build solution for clients. Not only are we a construction firm, but our platform offers architecture, design, engineering, real estate development and self-performance capabilities.

Clayco Compute will combine our industry-leading expertise with our proven track record of execution and meeting the toughest challenges of our clients. Creating this dedicated business unit will allow us to sharpen our focus to better serve our clients and help them achieve their goals.

With data center construction growing rapidly, what challenges do you see in meeting the demands of these hyperscale projects?

The biggest issue we’re facing is that the demand for data centers and quantum computing facilities is outpacing the growth and supply of transmission and power generation, and our clients are constantly asking us to help them solve their energy challenges.

Reimagining Vlasis Park: A Community-Centered Transformation

Lawrence Group is proud to have collaborated on the transformative vision for Vlasis Park, a cherished community space in Ballwin. Guided by extensive public feedback, the final concept design masterfully integrates elements from two preliminary concepts, resulting in a hybrid plan that balances community needs with innovative features. The revitalized Vlasis Park promises to be a hub for recreation, community events, and environmental education.

A Central Hub for Community Engagement

At the heart of the new design is the Great Lawn, which retains its role as a centerpiece of the park. This versatile space will continue to accommodate unstructured play, serve as a baseball field, and act as the staging area for signature community events like Ballwin Days. Enhanced with improved drainage and irrigation systems, the lawn will recover more efficiently after heavy use, ensuring its sustainability for future generations.

Playground and Recreation Reimagined

The central playground area is undergoing a major transformation to create an interactive and engaging play destination. A central staircase and retaining walls will connect the site’s features seamlessly, while the playground itself expands to include a new natural play area in place of the former police station. Slope play features and a renovated splash pad with sanitary connections will further enhance the playground’s appeal.

Recreational offerings have also been thoughtfully updated. The plan introduces three pickleball courts by converting one of the existing tennis courts, catering to the growing popularity of this sport. A new stage, positioned near the western parking lot, leverages the natural hillside for amphitheater-style seating and provides convenient access for concerts and events.

Sustainability and Environmental Education

A vital aspect of the final design is its focus on natural landscapes and sustainability. Features such as the prairie walk, shade garden, pollinator garden, and rehabilitated pond will foster biodiversity and provide serene spaces for visitors. Additionally, a bioretention area in the central northern section of the park will manage stormwater while serving as an educational tool. Signage will highlight the area’s stormwater functions, native plants, and hydrology, transforming this functional space into an interactive learning experience.

The park’s public works facility reflects a thoughtful integration of both concepts presented during the planning phase. The split-level administration and office building will front the street, optimizing functionality while blending seamlessly with the park’s aesthetic.

The Vlasis Park project exemplifies Lawrence Group’s commitment to designing spaces that enrich communities. By incorporating public input, preserving natural features, and introducing modern amenities, Vlasis Park is set to become a vibrant destination for recreation, education, and connection. We’re honored to play a part in shaping Ballwin’s community asset and look forward to seeing it thrive in the years to come.

Habit #6: Expectations

To feel successful, confident, loved…we have specific expectations that MUST be met, or we don't experience those feelings.

Do you know what your expectations are? Feel those feelings more often by adjusting your expectations with SEO.

S - Specific. Are they specific, grounded, and clear?

E - Easy. Are they easy to achieve or have you set yourself, and others, up to fail?

O - Ownership. Are you in control or have you given responsibility for your feelings to someone else?

Remember:

Feelings are directly related to expectations that are met or neglected. Know and manage your expectations.

Performance Tips:

  • If you want a particular feeling, make your expectations specific and easy to reach.

  • Take ownership of your life by creating expectations that YOU control.

Why Prefab Architecture Could Be the Future – But Probably Won’t Be | Architectural Digest

Michael Wyetzner of Michielli + Wyetzner Architects returns to AD to discuss prefab architecture and why it could be the future of housing–but probably won’t be.

Prefabricated architecture has always posed a more affordable and sustainable future for housing as they’re fast and cheaper to build and produce less waste in the long run, so why hasn’t it taken over? Wyetzner delves into the history of prefab and why it failed to take off how many architects have hoped it would.

Predictions Shaping the AEC Industry in 2025 – Vessel Architecture

As we step into 2025, the team gathered to discuss the design trends shaping the industry. From bold interior aesthetics to innovative construction techniques, these emerging themes reflect a world adapting to changing needs and preferences. Here’s what our architects see on the horizon this year:

1. The Role of AI in Architecture

Artificial intelligence is poised to make waves in the design and construction industries in 2025. “This year, we’re going to start seeing some headway in how AI really affects our industry,” Roger says.

With hundreds of applications in development, AI offers the potential to revolutionize how projects are delivered. From streamlining workflows to enhancing project accuracy, these technologies are setting a new standard for architectural services.

2. Color Drenching

“On the interiors side, color drenching is going to be huge,” says Lindsay, highlighting a departure from the light, airy palettes that have dominated recent years. This trend envelops spaces in a single hue, covering walls, ceilings, and trim with cohesive, often dark and moody tones.

This approach creates immersive environments, offering a more dramatic and grounded feel—a perfect antidote to years of neutral minimalism.

3. Fire-Resistant, Self-Sustaining Construction

Brian emphasizes the growing demand for fire-resistant design, explaining, “Fire-protective residential design has long lagged behind commercial design. 2025 will be the year fire-resistant residential construction begins to catch up.”

Pete points to a rising interest in self-sustaining homes as well, particularly in response to broader societal concerns. “There’s a fear of events that could slow society down, like power grid outages,” he explains. Todd emphasized how the homesteading movement is gaining traction, meaning families will seek smaller, more affordable homes that enable independent living.

These designs incorporate features like personal power generation, food-growing spaces, and alternative education setups. “Construction is only getting more expensive, so people are rethinking what a smaller home can look like,” Pete adds. Companies offering small home kits for rural and suburban living are paving the way for this shift.

4. Land Turnover

There will be a massive turnover in farmland ownership. “The Farmers’ Almanac predicts this will be the largest land turnover in 20 years,” says Lindsay. As older generations of farmers pass on, their properties of vast stretches of land will become available for purchase, offering new opportunities for many market sectors. However, this turnover also raises questions about foreign investment. “There’s been talk about limiting foreign parties in these transactions,” Todd notes. “If that happens, it’ll be interesting to see how the turnover plays out.”

These trends reflect a dynamic industry responding to cultural, environmental, and technological shifts. At Vessel, we embrace these changes as opportunities to innovate and deliver meaningful spaces. Our team is ready to help clients flourish in 2025 and beyond...

ATTITUDE

"The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life". Swindoll believed that attitude is more important than external factors, such as facts, money, and other people's opinions. He also said the remarkable thing we have is the attitude we will have each day. He said, "I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. ...we are in charge of our attitudes." This is a widely embraced message from Mr. Swindoll. If you are unfamiliar with it, we hope you enjoy the message.
