January 2023
A Note from our Executive Director

Dear friend,

This week marks my five year anniversary leading IVYP. Those five years passed in the blink of an eye. The children who were students in our Children’s Center five years ago have all graduated. In January 2018, our community was recovering from the devastating debris flow. Five years later, we are grappling with recovery from floods.

I’m someone who is always looking forward. I imagine the future I want to see and work to get there. The problem with always looking ahead, is that you never arrive. There is always something new to achieve. On anniversaries, it can be useful to look back to see how far we’ve come.

In the past five years, IVYP doubled its budget and impact. We’ve nurtured more than 500 babies, toddlers, and preschoolers. In the past five years, our Family Resource Center provided more than 45,000 services to more than 6,700 individuals. More than 21,000 people received food through our Healthy Food distribution and our emergency food pantry. We’ve hosted candidates’ forums and town halls, introducing our community to their elected officials. We gathered partners to help our community be more resilient and connected through our Goleta Valley Partners network. We spoke out about systemic racism and systemic poverty, and board and staff continue to explore our own biases. We supported children and families through a pandemic.

Whew! We could not do this work without you. Thank you to each one of you who made a donation in December. Please don’t stop! Your gifts enable us to meet the needs of children and families, even those we can’t anticipate. Thank you so much for believing in us. I can’t wait to see what the next five years brings!

Saying Goodbye to Liz

This month, we are saying goodbye to our Director of Development, Elizabeth Hahn. We are so grateful for her contributions and we've enjoyed having her at IVYP as she has led our development department since 2019. She will be taking the new position of Director of Advancement for the Santa Barbara Zoo.

"I believe very deeply in the mission of IVYP so I know I’m going to miss the work. Who we have become as an organization means so much to me as a member of our community and as a mother, and I will certainly miss that even though I know the work will continue."

Save The Date - LEAP 2023!

The LEAP awards are IVYP’s annual celebration and signature event. Recipients of the LEAP awards are honored for their impact in their communities as well as their hard work and dedication. We are thrilled to announce that the 2023 LEAP honorees are Jordan Killebrew and Steve Ortiz. Join us remotely on May 17, 2023 for a special virtual event.

Interested in Volunteering with us?

Are you looking for a meaningful way to give back to the community? We're actively looking for volunteers to help with our monthly food distributions! Volunteers are needed to take bags of food, distribute them to those in need, and then help clean up at the end. If you're interested in volunteering, send our Development Assistant an email at samantham@ivyp.org or fill out this form.

Harvest of the Month

Each month we share a healthy, easy and affordable recipe to try. This month we are highlighting Brussels Sprouts. Brussels sprouts are part of the cruciferous family of vegetables, which also includes broccoli, cabbage and kale. Even if you don't love them yet, Brussels sprouts are worth trying at least once for their health benefits alone. They're full of fiber and protein, and have been known to boost your immune system, lower blood pressure, and help keep cancer away. So try again if you didn't like them as a child —they might be a nutritious and healthy addition to your diet!

IVYP needs your support as we work hard to support our community. We’ve stepped up and we need your help to continue. Please consider a donation to IVYP’s COVID-19 Response Fund to help us continue to provide the caring, proactive and flexible support our community needs.
Be a diaper champion by sponsoring the cost of diapers for local families. Diapers are one of the most consistent requests from our families at our FRC. Disposable diapers can cost as much as $100 per month per baby so every contribution makes a big difference.
