A Lot To Be Thankful For

As the year comes to a close, we are reflecting with gratitude and humility about all of you who make Horizons at SFFS' impact possible. To our inspiring students, devoted families, hard-working staff, dedicated board members, wonderful volunteers, and generous supporters, we send much love and best of wishes for a new year full of peace, health, opportunity, and justice.

Horizons' Impact: Just the Facts

It may seem obvious that Horizons' summer learning program improves students' long-term academic outcomes, but what kind of impact does the program have on student attendance, motivation, and behavior? A new national study conducted by Concentric Research & Evaluation found that, compared to peers, long-term Horizons students had:
  • Higher attendance rates and lower rates of chronic absenteeism
  • Higher scores on standardized assessments of elementary math and science
  • Higher GPAs in 9th grade, a critical transition year
  • More course credit earned in 9th and 10th grade
  • Fewer incidents of repeating a grade
  • Fewer disciplinary referrals

Holiday Cheer at the SFFS Craft Fair

Horizons began the month by participating in a lovely annual marketplace hosted by SFFS. Six generous Horizons families brought vats of homemade food to sell, including pozole, tacos, and champurrado, a delicious Mexican hot chocolate. SFFS eighth grader Audrey also helped us sell cards featuring beautiful self-portraits made by Horizons' third grade artists over the summer. Special appreciation to SFFS community members Rylan, Caren, Anabella, and Jaime who supported Horizons with a portion of the proceeds they earned at their booths. At the end of the day, we raised over $800 for Horizons!
