Dear Friends and Partners:
Ahh...July. It has always been a month rich with memories; Warm weather, sunny days, and the joyful celebrations of two special birthdays—my oldest son's and mine. The Fourth of July, one of my favorite holidays, marks our nation's Independence Day.
As we move into July, I’m contemplating what independence truly means. As leaders, the concept of independence is frequently invoked. We ask if someone can work independently, which can be seen as a strength or a challenge. But have we considered the profound implications of independence in our personal and professional lives?
Independence is a powerful word, often overlooked in our discussions and development endeavors. We yearn for independence, cherish it, and feel frustrated when it is threatened or inhibited. It is a cornerstone of our identity and freedom. Our founding fathers sought independence from what they perceived as tyranny and oppression. Once they achieved it, they built a structure to preserve it, and we now celebrate this achievement annually.
July is an opportune time to reflect on those who serve and have served to maintain our collective independence. This includes the military, government employees, and citizens who contribute in many ways to uphold the freedoms we cherish. As leaders, especially those guiding veterans, we must ponder how independence applies to our worlds.
Consider these questions:
- How do your employees or people you lead feel when you grant them independence to get the job done?
- How do children behave in the classroom when given certain levels of independence
- What happens to people and organizations that need an opportunity to operate independently?
As we celebrate Independence Day, commit to fostering a culture of independence in all areas of our lives. Empower those we lead by granting them the freedom to innovate and grow. Let's support our veterans by helping them transition into roles where they can exercise independence and leverage their unique skills. And let's embrace our freedom by continuously striving to grow and improve.
This July, take a moment to reflect on the power and importance of independence. Consider applying this principle in your professional and personal life. By doing so, you honor the legacy of those who fought for our freedom and paved the way for a brighter, more independent future.
Happy Fourth of July! Be free and independent; let's make this a month of growth and empowerment.
