Reflections from your Pastors

May 27, 20025

Does It Really Matter That George Floyd Was Killed?

It is 1963 or 1964. A dark-skinned girl, about high school age, is walking down a long hill going home. She has nothing in her hands.

It is 1963 or 1964. A light-skinned girl, a Catholic high school girl, is walking up a long hill to a bus stop. She has text books in her arms and hands.

The two girls see each other from a distance, going down and up.

The dark-skinned girl’s thoughts are unknown by the light-skinned girl.

The light-skinned girl thinks nothing.

As they pass each other, one going up and the other coming down the same long hill,

the dark- skinned girl with full force slaps the face of the light-skinned girl.

The dark-skinned girl and light-skinned girl stare at each other in intense silence.

Waiting.

Both waiting for what happens next.

The light-skinned girl refrains from personalizing it.

The light-skinned girl reframes it, de-personalizing it.

The dark-skinned girl’s thoughts are unknown by the light-skinned girl.

In this intense silence, the dark-skinned begins to girl walk down-hill.

The light-skinned girl, left behind with no one to say anything to, begins to walk up-hill.

60 years later, the light-skinned woman maybe sees a little of what the dark-skinned girl saw:

Dark-skinned girl sees a light-skinned girl

sees a grey blazer

sees a white blouse

sees a grey pleaded skirt

see grey knee socks

sees maroon penny loafers

sees text books that

signal an intended future that is denied this dark-skinned girl.

60 years later, the light-skinned woman may now imagine that

the impatient, forceful voices of Civil Rights leaders race

in the dark-skinned girl’s head

as she gains as much fury walking downhill

as the hill gains speed in its descent.

George Floyd was killed 5 years ago. And countless others whose dark-skinned bodies are targets because of the dark skin.

Does it really matter?

Let us pray with Cole Arthur Riley: God who mends,

You demand of us not merely justice, but repair. We confess that we have reduced reconciliation to niceties and ‘unity’ out of fear for what it might actually cost a person. Expose this, so that we can be people of true repair – people who demand an accounting for the rubble left by our histories, who possess a sacred imagination for how we might bring reparations in our country, cities, and neighborhood. Give white people the courage to become honest about what they’ve stolen and what must be returned. And grant us the liberation necessary to ask for what we need, to ask for justice not merely in the vaguely moral, but with grave specificity in the economic chasms that whiteness has created. We want more. And we claim it. Amen.

At the Truth & Reconciliation Garden of Mepkin Abbey, Trappist monks have erected a monument on the site of unmarked graves of enslaved people and Native Americans. Their website, https://mepkinabbey.org opens with this quote of Thomas Merton’s, “We are all mediators for one another with Christ by our charity, by our sharing in his cross, by our love and humility in taking upon ourselves the sins of the world.” The new sculptor is named, “Thy Father’s Hand.”

Our Nights to Serve

Dear M.o.M family,

Our next week to accompany unhoused families will be the week of June 22, and our nights to serve are Monday, June 23 and Tuesday, June 24. (If those nights do not work for you, you may certainly sign up for other nights). We work with two other congregations, Saint Paul's and Christ United Methodist Church, and volunteer at Christ United Methodist Church at 301 Drake Road.

So for each night, Monday and Tuesday, we are looking for volunteers for the following help:

  • 3 Cooks: to prepare and serve, then clean up for our families from 5:30 to 7:30. The cooks decide on a menu, and  are asked to put it on a sign up about a week beforehand. We receive the numbers of adults and children to be served the Thursday before our service rotation.

  • 2 Evening Hosts: to eat dinner and visit with our families from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays there is also a need for someone to entertain and watch the children as parents meet with a FHN staffer.

  • 2 Overnight Hosts: to arrive at 8 pm and spend the night in designated rooms until 7 am and to serve as a support to the families if any needs arrive.

Please consider volunteering, as it is very gratifying to be of help and service to families who are temporarily experiencing difficulty. "Let us be the hands and feet of Christ"!!! The sign up genius link is below.....do not hesitate to contact me, Lynne Barnes (970-420-6462) or Jean Christen (970-213-7808) with your questions.

There are helpful videos available that we can direct you to, if you have never helped in this ministry before. Thank you and God bless you.....

No RSVP is required.  But we share this invitation with you because you are part of why we continue to be Light of Christ after 20 years.

The 301 Faith Partners Garden Needs Volunteers

There has never been a more appropriate time for a garden! We need locally grown food, both for ourselves and for the greater community, and the 301 Faith Partners supply some of this need through our garden.

But we need volunteers!

People who want to get their hands dirty in a productive and life-giving way, people who like to steward growing things, and people who value community are asked to please volunteer to help out with this worthwhile project of bringing healthy food to our little place in the world.

Social Justice Reflection

5th anniversary of the murder

of George Floyd

Tom Moos, Co-Chair

Social Justice Ministry

Today marks 5 years since the brutal murder of George Floyd by Minnesota police. His death sparked some of the largest protests since the Civil Rights era focused on use of excessive force by police officers especially towards people of color and a lack of police accountability. Even internationally, people began re-examining various manifestations of racism within their own countries. George Floyd’s 6 year old daughter, Gianna, told President Biden that her daddy’s death had changed the world.

Unfortunately, there remains much evidence of entrenched systemic racism. In the U.S., Black people are still 2.8x more likely to be killed by police than white people. However, real progress has been made in diversifying police departments and enlisting recruits eager to be agents of change in policing procedures. Despite recent federal mandates reversing implementation of formal DEI roles and practices, many states and local communities continue to initiate reforms. The work of change may be slow, may falter, but it continues.

You might be interested to learn that Gianna Floyd, now 11, and her mom are also continuing the work of combating racism in practical ways, keeping George’s memory alive, sparking conversations about racial justice, and working to construct a community center through the George and Gianna Floyd Foundation.

In February 2024, Fr Teri Harroun provided a zoom-based class on Jesus and Justice Poetry for members and friends of Mary of Magdala. Teri constructed a poem, real time, using phrases provided by the attendees as we contemplated the knee of oppression on the chest of its victims.

“the breath of George Floyd”

by Mary of Magdala ECC and friends (Ft. Collins, CO)

the weight of the world

is on our chest

I can’t breathe

the hardness of smug white supremacy.

is on our chest

I can’t breathe

the gesture of prayer turned into an act of torture,

a weapon of death

is on our chest

I can’t breathe

the noose of lynching

is on our chest

I can’t breathe

the terror of privileged men

is on our chest

I can’t breathe

the fear of difference

is on our chest

I can’t breathe

the Execution of the Crucified;

the Executor of the crucified

is on our chest

I can’t breathe

and your privileged eyes that look away, ears that do not hear

is on our chest

I can’t breathe

I can’t breathe

I can’t

breathe.

breathe

breathe,

do something

one something

to open the airways

that everyone might

breathe

the world waits,

weights

to breathe
