Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord

The Ascension of Jesus Christ into the heavens is recorded in: Mark 16:19-20, Luke 24:36-53, Acts 1:6-12, and 1 Timothy 3:16. The Ascension has always been a type of mystical feast, like the Transfiguration which occurs before Passion Week. Both events occur in the presence of a few or more apostles and not among the crowds that Jesus had typically drawn for teaching.

The meaning of the Ascension for us is very clear: Jesus left us the mission to go out and preach the good news. The first chapter of Luke’s ‘Acts of the Apostles,’ repeats this story with a few more details and the story ends with a beautiful description of the apostles looking up to the heavens as Jesus disappears before them. They are aghast. He is disappearing again. But this time they will never see him again. He has left them—and us— with a mandate. They are trembling as two angels appear asking them: “Why do

you stand looking up to the skies? This Jesus, who has been taken up to heaven will return just as you saw him leave…” In other words, get to work! Start proclaiming the good news. You have been commissioned!  (from the blog of Sr. Mary Ann Flannery, Vincentian Sisters of Charity.)

Reflect this week on your personal mission—which changes throughout life—but which requires Jesus as the center of your focus for the mission. There is so much to be done: Can you volunteer for Faith, Family, Hospitality on Monday, June 23, or Tuesday, June 24 to prepare a meal or to be an evening or overnight host? Perhaps donate some food for the Little Pantry, or become a lector or Eucharistic Minister. Join the Hospitality team or host an Adult Education program…

Please read and reflect on the story of the Ascension in the scriptures. Then, do not “stand looking up” for Jesus. Wherever you get involved, you will find him there.

God bless,

Mother Rosean

Our Nights to Serve

Dear M.o.M family,

Our next week to accompany unhoused families will be the week of June 22, and our nights to serve are Monday, June 23 and Tuesday, June 24. (If those nights do not work for you, you may certainly sign up for other nights). We work with two other congregations, Saint Paul's and Christ United Methodist Church, and volunteer at Christ United Methodist Church at 301 Drake Road.

So for each night, Monday and Tuesday, we are looking for volunteers for the following help:

  • 3 Cooks: to prepare and serve, then clean up for our families from 5:30 to 7:30. The cooks decide on a menu, and  are asked to put it on a sign up about a week beforehand. We receive the numbers of adults and children to be served the Thursday before our service rotation.

  • 2 Evening Hosts: to eat dinner and visit with our families from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays there is also a need for someone to entertain and watch the children as parents meet with a FHN staffer.

  • 2 Overnight Hosts: to arrive at 8 pm and spend the night in designated rooms until 7 am and to serve as a support to the families if any needs arrive.

Please consider volunteering, as it is very gratifying to be of help and service to families who are temporarily experiencing difficulty. "Let us be the hands and feet of Christ"!!! The sign up genius link is below.....do not hesitate to contact me, Lynne Barnes (970-420-6462) or Jean Christen (970-213-7808) with your questions.

There are helpful videos available that we can direct you to, if you have never helped in this ministry before. Thank you and God bless you.....

There has never been a more appropriate time for a garden! We need locally grown food, both for ourselves and for the greater community, and the 301 Faith Partners supply some of this need through our garden.

But we need volunteers!

People who want to get their hands dirty in a productive and life-giving way, people who like to steward growing things, and people who value community are asked to please volunteer to help out with this worthwhile project of bringing healthy food to our little place in the world.
