Solemnity of the Assumption of The Blessed Virgin Mary

Tomorrow, August 15 is the Feast of the Assumption. This feast commemorates the belief that when Mary of Nazareth, the Mother of Jesus, died, she was assumed, body and soul, into heavenly glory. She did not go through the natural process of physical decay upon death. Faith in the assumption of Mary has a strong foundation throughout the church's history and has been celebrated since the fourth century CE.

In 1950, Pope Pius XII declared the Assumption of Mary official dogma of the Roman Catholic Church. There is no explicit text in the Bible specific to Mary's assumption, but there are precedents for assumption found there in the cases of the Old Testament patriarch Enoch, and the prophet Elijah, both holy men in the history of Israel who were taken up by God into heaven.

Pondering Mary's unique role in the history of salvation, and her perfect union with her son, the early church made the case for her assumption in its faith that she ultimately shared in his glory. She was, after all, present at his Incarnation and birth, present with Joseph at the temple in Jerusalem, present throughout his “hidden life,” present at the first miracle at Cana, present at significant moments in his public ministry, present at his crucifixion, placed in the care of John the beloved disciple, and present at the beginnings of the church. She could truly say of Jesus, “This is my body, this is my blood.” (National Catholic Reporter, 1999)

Let us praise the Queen of Heaven and Earth as we pray…

O Mary, Mother of God, Mother of the Church, assumed into heaven, pray for us and lead us into eternal life.

News From Gray La Fond*

Hello to my friends of Mary of MagdaIa!!

I have been traveling in Central Europe --I have been to Kraków, Poland, Germany, then Czech Republic, and Italy for the papal mass during the Jubilee of Youth. Click here for a few of my travel photos I took over the last few weeks.

Next year, I will be living and working in Detroit with a Jesuit school, University of Detroit, Mercy. I am going to be an Assistant University Minister. I was not expecting this position, but I bet a lot of you will not be surprised at all. I will be doing this through the Jesuit Volunteer Corps, which is a program focused on spirituality, social justice, community, and simple living. If you want to learn more about the program, here is a link to the values page.

In short, they are ecumenically focused and very affirming of all sorts of people, so no need to worry about me.

I have been asked to raise some money to help with program costs, since JVC will cover my living expenses and UDM gets me pretty much for free. If you feel called to give, here is a link to my fundraising page.

Hopefully I will have an update about medical school soon! I hope everyone is doing great and I miss you all.
