Reflection from our Pastors
Tuesday, July 8, 2025
Sunday’s Gospel spoke of the Reign of God (Luke 10:9). “The reign of God preached by Jesus means a new consciousness of being in the world, a consciousness of relatedness, inclusivity, non-duality, and community. Jesus ushered in a new presence of God, a new realm of God based on the empowerment of community.” (The Emergent Christ, Ilia Delio, 2011.)
"The eye through which I see God is the same eye through which God sees me;
my eye and God's eye are one eye, one seeing, one knowing, one love." - Meister Eckhart
We do not see things as they are; we see them as we are.
What might the ongoing flooding of the Guadalupe River in Texas tell us about God
suffering within us, that our lives have meaning beyond the now. Here is a response
from Unfolding Light:
God speaks to the brokenhearted
Beloved,
news of your sadness
will soon reach me
through the usual channels.
But I already know it.
I am the rain of your sorrow
before the clouds
even come to you.
My heart goes out to you
before I even hear your prayers.
Though you think me distant
I am right here,
in it.
I hold you and your grief
like my twin children.
In time I will bear you both
to a place of joy,
but now I am simply present,
though unseen, hidden
in your cries and questions,
in your silence.
My love, I am the emptiness
that holds you.

Let us open to the light that we may be bright where it is dim.

Social Justice Reflection
By Tom Moos
The territory of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara (collectively. MHA) indigenous peoples once encompassed much of west and central North Dakota. Beginning in 1851, the US government began to delimit their territory as western expansion accelerated. Through a series of treaties, congressional acts and executive orders, their territory was steadily reduced.
In 1851, the Fort Laramie Treaty legally defined the MHA territory to include over 12 ½ million acres. In 1870, the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation was established by executive order without Congressional or Tribal input and reduced the MHA territory by 60% to under 5 million acres.
Ten years later, in 1880, another executive order, again without Congressional consultation or Tribal agreement stole another 1 ½ million acres to establish a Northern Pacific Railroad right of way and left the MHA tribes only 3 ½ million acres.
In 1891, Congress ratified an 1886 land allotment act under which ¾ of the remaining reservation was “purchased” for $800,000 leaving the MHA nation with under 1 million acres. This was followed by the Homestead Act of 1910 which opened 1/3 of the land to non-tribal settlement leaving the nation with just over 645,000 acres.
In 1949, the MHA nation reluctantly was compelled to sell the most fertile 150,000 remaining acres to the US Army Corp of Engineers (inset photo) for the building of the Garrison Dam on the Missouri river, which created Lake Sakakawea, the second largest US man-made lake by area after Lake Oahe in South Dakota and the 3rd largest by volume after Lake Mead and Lake Powell. Garrison Dam impounded 75 miles of the Missouri river.
The Garrison Dam, along with other dams positioned from Montana to South Dakota, known as the Pick-Sloan Project, were designed to solve extreme flooding of the Missouri Basin, enabled irrigation, provided supplemental water and hydroelectric power, controlled sediment, and created recreational opportunities. However, the lakes formed behind the dams eliminated 90% of the timber and 75% of wildlife habitats on the Fort Berthold, Cheyenne River, Standing Rock, Crow Creek and Lower Brule Indian reservations and displaced the majority of the indigenous populations from fertile lands along the river to the much less hospitable and smaller remaining areas of the reservations.
Native American historian Vine Deloria Jr has described the Pick-Sloan Plan as “the single most destructive act ever perpetrated on any tribe by the United States”. Indigenous poverty and dependence on federal aid remain a lasting legacy of this project.
