Standing on the Doorsill with God
We hear about the ‘future’ and pondering it, we realize the future is now. We have been awakened by years of messages from respected spiritualists, messages hidden and forbidden of theologians and mystics, original scrolls and treasures buried in the sand, under volcanic ash, and deep beneath the seas. We have been awakened by years of messages from scientists with foresight, philosophers of experience, technology that shows us our world and cosmos as it has never been seen before.
Testimony of this ‘now’ are, You Tube videos, podcasts, sub-stacks and books with titles like The Book of Awakening by Mark Nepo, The Future of Wisdom by Bruno Barnhardt, Pillars of Flame by Maggie Ross, One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This by Omar El Akkad, The Science of the Cross by Edith Stein, Weaving Sundown in a Scarlet Light by Joy Harjo, The 1619 Project created by Nikole Hannah Jones, Black Liturgies by Cole Arthur Riley, The Cross and the Lynching Tree by James Cone, Life After Doom by Brian McLaren, The Tears of Things by Richard Rohr, The Not-Yet-God by Ilia Delio, The Intercarnations by Catherine Keller, The False White Gospel by Jim Wallis, Oneing: The Path of the Prophet and Oneing: the Future of Christianity from the Center for Action and Contemplation, and a seminar, Unfinished: A Spirituality of Change created and presented by Rick Klein, and the list goes on.
This may tell us that we are standing on a threshold, being beckoned forward. Going back, into the past, is not an option because the term ‘past’ means the moment is gone/over/being rewritten by us in the now, in our awakened state. We are one step from crossing. We have already seen the door, approached it, knocked and it opened. The invitation to cross over the doorsill we stand on is offered. What do we do?

Join Table for 4 Now!
The Hospitality Ministry is offering the last time to join a “Table for 4” in 2025. This is an opportunity to get to know
other members of Mary of Magdala in smaller groups. Table for 4 is open to singles and couples.
Here’s how it works:
First, participants are arranged into a group of 4 (or 6 depending on responses). Second, the Table for 4 group decides whether to go out to breakfast, lunch, dinner, coffee, drinks, etc. Then, each Table will also find an agreeable date to meet one time during the months of August or September. And finally, you get to go out with a nice group of people and enjoy the time together.

Social Justice Reflection

The ECC newsletter sent out this past week by the Office of the Presiding Bishop included an article by Bishop Armando Leyva about the impacts of current immigration policies specifically on the largely Hispanic population of the ECC communities in the Diocese of California. Bishop Armando noted the fear and uncertainty created by ICE officers confronting or detaining his parish members solely because they speak Spanish or exhibit Hispanic features These are our siblings in Christ, members of our religious Communion. ICE actions have paralyzed businesses and impacted visits to parks, hospitals, courts and churches. The bishop asked who can feel safe in this anti-immigrant context? What are their rights? Where can they feel safe?
We should be asking ourselves, what can we do as ECC communities to help our oppressed siblings in faith? How can we demonstrate support? How should we respond?
This week, ICE launched a major recruitment campaign targeted to attract former military and police offering $50,000 signing bonuses, student loan forgiveness, enhanced retirement options, and other perks. In support of the recruitment campaign, the president referred undocumented residents as the country’s “worst of the worst” criminals calling them “terrorists, pedophiles, MS-13 gang members, murderers, rapists, drug and human traffickers”. However, studies have repeatedly confirmed that first generation immigrants commit crimes at significantly lower rates than US citizens and even 2nd and 3rd generation immigrants commit fewer crimes. Being present in the US without lawful status is a civil issue, not a criminal offense. So connecting immigrants to crime is at best a myth; at worst, an outright lie.
Legal processes and the courts themselves are aggravating the confusion and false narrative. Police who detain someone even for a misdemeanor (e.g. shoplifting) are directed to turn over suspected non-citizens to ICE. While held by ICE, these individuals may be unable to respond to the charges or appear in court. If ICE deports them, they won’t be permitted to re-enter the country legally in the future with an open criminal case against them.
A good friend told me that how we spend our money reflects our creed. Can we stand by as our tax dollars are used by ICE to persecute our ECC siblings in the diocese of California or our immigrant neighbors right here in Fort Collins? How can we demonstrate our displeasure? How should we respond?
