Reflection from your Pastors

Tuesday, June 3, 2025

Every Monday morning at 9:30 a small group of us pray together for peace. We pray: “This Monday morning, we pray for Peace in our hearts, our homes, our families, our nation and our world through the practice of God’s radical love…”

And, yesterday’s Grateful Living posted this Word of the Day by Adrienne Marie Brown: “We need movements rooted in love right now, movements powered not by difference and exclusion and punishment, but by common ground, compassion, humility, healthy boundaries, patience and healing.” wfd@grateful.org

What does it take to be a movement?

What does ‘God’s radical love’ mean to you?

Is our Mary of Magdala community a radical love movement?

If you are asked “Are you an active member of this love movement?” How would you respond?

Your responses are welcomed via my email: jdelysswagner10@gmail.com.

With gratitude for you,

Pastor Jane

  • 1 overnight host for Monday, June 23 (8 pm to 7 am)
  • Two volunteers to watch the children on Tuesday, while the parents meet (7-8 pm)

Please consider volunteering, as it is very gratifying to be of help and service to families who are temporarily experiencing difficulty. "Let us be the hands and feet of Christ!" The sign up genius link is below, and do not hesitate to contact Lynne Barnes (970-420-6462) or Jean Christen (970-213-7808) with your questions.

There are helpful videos available that we can direct you to, if you have never helped in this ministry before. Thank you and God bless you!

Social Justice Reflection

By Tom Moos, Co-Chair Social Justice Ministry

Todays Gospel recounts The Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth. The angel Gabriel had just foretold that Mary would conceive and bear “the Son of the Most High” and informed her that her relative, Elizabeth would also bear a son in her old age. Mary does not delay but hastens to visit Elizabeth. The story is not only spiritually beautiful but carries deep social justice overtones. The story reveals God's preferential love for the lowly and the transformative power of solidarity, humility, and hope.

Both women might be considered marginalized by their circumstances. Mary, a young, pregnant, unwed girl, and Elizabeth, an elderly woman who had long been barren, both stood on the edges of society. In their time, their conditions might have led to shame or dismissal by others, or worse. Yet, God chose them to play central roles in the divine plan of salvation. By going to Elizabeth, Mary affirms the value of relationship, community, and mutual support, all of which are core to any vision of justice.

In the Magnificat, Mary’s song of praise, she proclaims that God “has scattered the proud,” “brought down the mighty,” and “lifted up the lowly.” This is not simply a promise of some future utopia. Mary expresses the faith and recognizes her agency in God’s work of turning the world upside down, where power is rebalanced and dignity is restored especially for those most forgotten. This is not just poetic language—it is a prophetic statement that challenges systems of inequality and oppression. Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, honors Mary without jealousy, acknowledging her faith and role in God’s plan. Their mutual affirmation contrasts with competitive or hierarchical systems that dominate much of society.

The Visitation challenges us to seek out the vulnerable, accompany them with compassion, and speak out against injustice. It is a reminder that true justice begins in relationships rooted in love, humility, and faith. Just as Mary and Elizabeth brought hope to each other, we too are called to be bearers of hope in our time and to our communities.
