Building a Foundation for the Future

Letter from Dr. Luft

Dear Putnam Valley Community:

In typical fashion, it was a busy end to our school year. We enjoyed the celebrations of moving-up ceremonies and watching the PVHS Class of 2023 receive their diplomas. We are so very proud of our students, their eagerness to learn and grow, their resilience in the face of challenges, and their many accomplishments over the course of this school year. Congratulations to all!

It was another banner year in Putnam Valley. The implementation of a new reading program at Putnam Valley Elementary School has improved our alignment between grade levels and helped standardize our instructional delivery and resources. The Middle School has moved from the feasibility stage to being considered an IB candidate school and we have talented teachers ready to lead this work as programme coordinators. At our High School, students continue to take advantage of the rigorous learning opportunities available to them and challenge themselves through the completion of their senior year.

Outside of the classrooms, students have continued to excel through athletics, music, and the arts. Student performances concluded with standing ovations, awards and honors were plentiful, and athletic achievements reached new heights.

Recent settlements with both the Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA) and the Putnam Valley Federation of Teachers (PVFT) recognize the efforts of our dedicated staff while ensuring financial stability for the district moving forward.

Looking forward to next year, we will be welcoming our first class of incoming students from the Garrison School District. As our High School prepares for its reauthorization as an IB World School, our Middle School will be taking the next steps toward the IB Middle Years Programme. Our Elementary School will be welcoming Carly Robey as their new Assistant Principal as they continue the amazing work that has catapulted our achievement scores on state assessments to the top of the region.

The students of Putnam Valley are surrounded by talented educators who deeply care about their social, emotional, and academic well-being. The summer is a time to not only relax but to reflect on all that was accomplished over the past year. Even better days are ahead for the Putnam Valley School District, and we remain proud of all we have accomplished.

I hope you enjoy this newsletter which highlights the many achievements and celebrations that took place as we closed out the school year.

Thank you to our dedicated teachers, staff, and parents for your support throughout the year. I wish you all a happy and healthy summer.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jeremy Luft

Superintendent of Schools

Moving Up and Moving On

Congratulations to all!

Fourth Grade Moves on to Middle School

The PVES Fourth Grade Moving Up Ceremony was held on June 21. The ceremony celebrated the elementary school years and marked the students' transition to middle school. Students were dressed in their best attire and were accompanied by proud parents, teachers, and staff members. The ceremony began with the national anthem, followed by speeches from administrators and a moving song performed by our third-grade students. The fourth-grade teachers presented each student with a certificate and Joel Castro was the recipient of the award named in memory of PVES student Fatima Martinez. It was a bittersweet moment for everyone as they celebrated the students' accomplishments and wished them the best for their future academic journey. See pictures here. Video

Eighth Grade Moves on to High School

The evening ceremony was a grand success filled with pride, joy, and excitement as the school community celebrated the achievements of our eighth graders. The ceremony began with a warm welcome from the principal, who congratulated the students on their hard work and dedication. The students then received certificates for their achievements in academics, followed by their certificates for the completion of middle school. Parents and teachers were full of pride as the students crossed the stage.

The highlight of the ceremony was the speeches given by the class co-presidents. Each student shared their experiences and expressed their gratitude towards their teachers, parents, and peers. It was a heartwarming moment, and the audience was touched by their words.

The ceremony ended with a dance party at Cortland Colonial. It was a truly celebratory evening for the students and their families, and we are so proud of these Tigers as they make their way to PVHS!

Congratulations to the Class of 2023!

When the weather moved the graduation ceremony indoors, the Class of 2023 was the perfect size to accommodate holding the event in our High School Performing Arts Center for the first time ever. It was beautiful! The room was filled with pride and joy as the graduating class of 2023 took the stage. Several student speakers shared reflective and inspiring speeches, making the event truly unforgettable. Students, Amarah Salgado and Leilani Harris wowed the crowd with their stunning rendition of "For Good" from the hit musical Wicked. The entire ceremony was a reminder of the hard work, successes and challenges, and the many relationships built and cherished. It was a moment to remember and a perfect end to the high school journey. As they embark on their new journey, we wish the graduates all the best and know that they will continue to make us proud. Congratulations to the Class of 2023 on a wickedly successful graduation!

Putnam Valley Elementary School Teacher Meaghan Boyle receives NYS Board of Regents Award

On Tuesday, June 13, 2023, Putnam Valley Elementary School teacher Meaghan Boyle received the 2023 Better Beginnings Award sponsored by the New York State Board of Regents.

This award honors the life and career of Helen Bach Moss, a young New York State educator who passed away in 1988. Mrs. Moss touched the lives of many people; her career was distinguished by genuine respect and love for children. She was ever caring toward students and their parents and acted as a worthy role model in all of her endeavors. Her family and friends petitioned the Board of Regents to establish a memorial fund that would go annually to other elementary teachers exhibiting these qualities and provide an endowment to award a cash stipend to an elementary teacher with an additional award for the teacher’s school district. This award recognizes early childhood education as the most effective investment for long-term educational success.

The nomination process for the Better Beginnings Award involves statements of support from students, parents, other educators and the local community and recognizes current teachers who are skilled at engaging young minds and developing nurturing relationships.  Dr. Luft, Superintendent of Schools shared, “Anyone lucky enough to work with Meaghan knows these qualities describe her perfectly.” In a letter of recommendation, Assistant Superintendent of Pupil Personnel, Dr. Natalie Doherty, wrote, “Meaghan Boyle is an exceptional educator and an inspiration to any and all who have the good fortune to be impacted by her skill, compassion, and love for children.”

School Board President Barbara Parmly and former long-time Board Trustee Guy Cohen made the trip to Albany and shared, “We remember Meaghan as a kindergarten student at Putnam Valley Elementary School. To watch her teach in the very district where she attended as a child is so very rewarding.  Meagan and her journey are part of what makes our school community so special.”
