Reflections On Turning 85
Embracing Life With Gratitude
And Purpose
By Larry Hayes, A050 publisher
As I celebrated my 85th birthday this month, I found myself reflecting on the journey that has brought me here, surrounded by my loving family. Each year is a gift and reaching this milestone feels like a testament to the power of perseverance, a positive outlook and a commitment to staying active—both physically and mentally.
The joy of staying active
One of the things that keeps me going is my passion for tennis. Having played USTA tennis for 30+ years and still playing, it's more than just a hobby; it's a way of life. Tennis helps keep me fit, sharpens my mind and reminds me that age is just a number.
On my 85th birthday, I won a USTA 70+ doubles match. What a joy to be on the court, competing, learning AND improving. The camaraderie of the sport and the thrill of the game fuel my spirit and contribute to my well-being. Win or lose. Doesn't really matter. It's always a good match.
AfterOver50 Media: a labor of love
Another source of fulfillment comes from my 20 year work as founder and publisher of ActiveOver50, a digital media company for boomers and seniors in the San Francisco Bay Area.
My purpose from day one was to deliver useful and interesting information to help older adults enjoy a longer, healthier and more meaningful life. The journey continues.
That's why my wife, daughter, and I organized and hosted the ActiveOver50 Resource Fair in Campbell last week. It was a sold-out event with over 250 attendees. I couldn't have done it without my family—they're the key to my long life and good health.
My wife of 56 years is my rock and soulmate. My daughter is a marketing expert and the mastermind behind the success of our Resource Fair. I'm a lucky man to have both in my life.

Healing Body And Mind
Exploring The Great Bear Rainforest In British Columbia
By Don Mankin, Travel Writer
As our boat glided across Kitlope Lake, the surface gleamed like glass, reflecting the steep, thickly forested slopes that lined the shore. Wrapped in silence, we gazed at the jagged, icy peaks looming in the background.
We were on the fourth day of a week long adventure deep into the fjords of the northern coast of British Columbia, one of the most beautiful places on earth.
The Great Bear Rainforest is wild and remote — no roads, only deep fjords and channels lined with lush forests, glacier encrusted mountains and granite cliffs.
At almost 16 million acres, it’s the largest intact temperate coastal rainforest in the world, and, thanks to decades of advocacy by environmentalists and First Nations tribes, most of it is now a nature preserve.

Old But Not Dead.Yet
By Evelyn Preston, Money Lady
I’ve discovered there’s a definite point when a person becomes old! No, nothing like a special birthday, new decade or those indelible signs like cataracts or wrinkles.
Gray hair, stiff backs and slower steps don’t even count. What I believe is that the very first time we begin checking obituaries truly signals we’ve slid into that can-no-longer-avoid stage— and moved on to acceptance of—old age.
Even when we soften the blow and call ourselves seniors or elders, reading obits tacitly admits that people in our own generation, really do…those in our peer group actually can…die. That we’re well on the road to the startling possibility, if not strong probability, that there’s more life behind us than ahead!

ASK LARRY
By Larry Hayes, A050 Publisher
"I’m 80 And Fast Running Out Of Money. How Can I Generate More Income?"
The good news is that there are options available that are flexible, rewarding and suitable for various levels of physical ability and time commitment. Here are some practical ways
to earn additional money.
Freelancing and consulting
Many seniors have decades of experience in specific fields from teaching and writing to engineering and business management. Offering consulting or freelance services can be a great way to use your expertise to earn extra income.
• Online tutoring for students in subjects you're skilled in.
• Consulting services to small businesses or individuals needing advice in your field.
• Writing and editing services if you have a knack for language and communication.
Platforms like Upwork and Fiverr are excellent places to offer these services.
Rent out a spare room or property
If you have a spare room or a second property, renting it out can provide a steady source of income. Websites like Airbnb or Vrbo make it easy to find short-term renters which can offer flexibility. Long-term rental options are also available.

Ask Marilyn
"Is a Reverse Mortgage Right
For You?"
With over 15 years experience right here in Silicon Valley, I can help answer your questions about reverse mortgages.
Q: Will the bank own my home?
The bank does not take ownership of your home; they simply extend a loan to you. You continue to own and live in your home and are responsible for payment of property taxes, required insurance and if applicable, HOA fees.
Q: Do my children/family members lose their inheritance?
No, a borrower may designate an heir of their choosing. The heir(s) will inherit the home after the last surviving borrower passes away and may then choose to keep (by paying off the amount of reverse mortgage balance) or sell the home. Should they choose to sell, any remaining equity after paying off the loan (minus interest and fees) would be theirs.
Q: What is the lending limit of the HECM reverse mortgage?
As of January 1, 2023, it increased to $1,089,300. Which means
it's very likely you can qualify for more money.
To learn more about reverse mortgages, call me today 408.722.0010. Email: gmross2404@comcast.net.

Book Review
"True Confessions Of An Ambivalent Caregiver"
A Memoir In Essays
By Cindy Eastman
Publisher's Note--this is NOT your typical book on caregiving and the selfless act of caring for a loved one, especially for a parent.
In brutally honest detail, Cindy describes the agonizing difficulty of caring for her dying 88 year old dad and the toll it took on her and her family.
"I'm on the job every minute of every day; there are no days off. It's hard and takes a toll on a family. For almost four years, I rarely got a full night's sleep."
"The only way my life was going to change was if my dad died. I didn't want to be my dad's caretaker anymore."
To read her touching story on the difficulty of caregiving, go to Amazon.
