“Be still and know that I am God”
Mary of Magdala sponsors a 9am Morning Peace Prayer on Mondays. Some of us have remarked that it’s a great way to start the week. We are a fortunate group who are available at 9am to come together on zoom. For those of us who are not, we are thinking of adding an Evening Peace Prayer on Wednesdays so we can pray together on zoom with you too.
Interestingly, the number of the prayers we pray together are growing as we bring them forward. We deeply feel the need for peace, to be settled in our hearts, and live in right relationship with others, nature, our nation and our world. Our intentions always start with “For peace in our hearts…” and expand into ever widening circles of life. We lay down the foundation to bring our suffering or broken hearts to God for holding and healing.
Today, another new prayer was offered. All prayers brought by participants are included, and all voices are heard. We spend between 15 to 20 minutes passing our voices around to each other, and raising our voices to Abba, the Holy One. Always at the end, we are naturally silent, sitting in the Spirit, and allowing the moment to be. In a few moments someone breaks the silence, someone has to. Today though, someone suggested that we stay in silence for a little longer, just ‘to be’ in the presence we have brought forth, to “Be still and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10a NRSV)
With hearts open, “Abide in me as I abide in you” (Jn 15: 4). For 15 minutes plus 1 minute of
time, you who are up at 8:55am are invited to join in bringing peace to our world even if only for 15 minutes plus 1.
May we live always in the flow of the Spirit,
Pastor Jane

Social Justice Reflection
Pauli Murray (born Anna Pauline Murray in 1910) is one of those people whose contributions to civil rights left a lasting legacy but who remains relatively unknown. In personal correspondence with family, Murray self-described as a “he/she personality” but in the anti-queer climate of the 20th century, publicly identified as a woman. In this reflection, I can only highlight a few of Murray’s many “firsts” and accomplishments.
Pauli Murray refused to acquiesce to the “separate but equal” doctrine. Murray sought admission to better-resourced white schools rather than segregated universities, but faced rejection due to discriminatory policies concerning gender and race. For example, after graduating from Hunter College, Murray was denied admission to the all-white University of North Carolina graduate school and appealed to President and Eleanor Roosevelt, which did not result in admission, but led to a lifelong friendship and correspondence with the First Lady. In 1940 (15 years before Rosa Parks), Murray and a friend were arrested for refusing to give up their seats in the whites-only section of a bus in Virginia. These 2 events motivated Pauli to pursue a career as a civil rights lawyer. Murray attended Howard University’s Law School and graduated first in the class. While there, Pauli wrote a paper architecting an attack against Plessy –v- Ferguson arguing that educational segregation was unconstitutional. Later, this paper formed the basis for the landmark Brown –v- Education case led and won by Thurgood Marshall and paved the way for racially integrated schools nationwide.
Though Howard valedictorians were traditionally admitted to Harvard Law for post-grad fellowships, Murray’s application was denied because Harvard refused to admit women. Again this denial motivated action. Although the 14th amendment to the Constitution was intended primarily to provide protection under the law to formerly enslaved persons, Murray built a case arguing that the amendment’s use of the word “person” applied to all people, including women. Ruth Bader Ginsberg used this argument in Reed v. Reed in which the Supreme Court ruled that discrimination based on gender was unconstitutional because it denies equal protection. Thus Pauli Murray was instrumental in legally overturning segregation of many forms.
Murray eventually became the first African-American to receive a JSD from Yale. At the age of 62, Pauli Murray left the practice of law and received an MDiv before becoming the first Black Episcopal priest perceived as a woman. Murray died in 1985 and was elevated to sainthood by the Episcopal Church in 2012. I encourage you to view the documentary “My Name is Pauli Murray” to learn more about this most remarkable person.
