Reflection from Your Pastor
Tuesday, September 24, 2024
Summer ends and Autumn begins about now. The shadows are soft and long now, the breeze is cool, the sun sets by 6:30pm when it seems only yesterday it set at 9pm. Early autumn is here and we in our desire for union with creation, sing the song to Autumn, feel our bodies resist the quick movements of heated summers and begin to slow down as the sap drips down. We search the early turning leaves and think of checking the stack of firewood.
Apple orchards.
Cider with cinnamon and donuts.
Drying pumpkins seeds to snack.
Ringing the fire with song and friends.
Edward Hayes* gives us a prayer prayed beside the candle flame:
“Dance with delight, O flame of autumn fire,
as the Earth, spinning and leaning away from the sun,
begins to cool from the summer heat.
Speak to me of the promise hidden in this season of autumn.
For spring is seeded in this season of completion,
just as the giant oak exists within the acorn.
Autumn fire, orange and yellow sacrament of the sun,
Light up the darkness with your dancing.
Your power is seeded in the ripeness
of the fruit and grain of this harvest season.
Great is God, whose heart is the shrine
wherein lives the whole universe;
great is your heart my Beloved,
greater still is your unceasing love for me.
May my love for you enflame my every word of thanksgiving
To reflect the golden beauty of autumn
That the Earth dons once again.
Amen.+
Blessing you with the glory of Autumn,
Pastor Jane

Faith, Family, Hospitality
Dear loving & generous MoM community members,
We will soon have the chance to feel the joy of serving the families of Fort Collins who are experiencing homelessness. This rotation, we will be helping these families on Tuesday, Oct.15 & Thursday, Oct. 17. We are in need of cooks, evening hosts, and overnight hosts for those days. However, overnight hosts can sign up for any night.
A special invitation to those of you who haven't volunteered before, to consider helping this time. It's always so rewarding to interact with these parents and their children.
Please prayerfully consider this opportunity to help the unhoused families of Fort Collins.
You can sign up to serve here. You can also Jean or Lynne know if you can help.

Social Justice Reflection
In 1965, at the end of the march from Selma to the Alabama State Capital in Montgomery, Martin Luther King Jr proclaimed “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice”. Reviewing the history of racism in the United States, one cannot help but recognize a truth behind this sentiment. Who can argue with the abolition of slavery, the adoption of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution extending the Bill of Rights to the formerly enslaved, the 15th and 19th Amendments granting the right to vote, the desegregation of public schools, buses and luncheonettes, and passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlawing discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin? And yes, we’ve even had our first Black President.
However, in his essay, entitled “Progress” which comprises the 17th chapter of the “1619 Project”, Dr Ibram X. Kendi warns that despite the gains, today’s reality for Black Americans remains unequal and falls far short of the vision of freedom, equality and justice for all. In fact, the racial gap may be widening. For example, Black Americans are incarcerated at 5 times the rate of whites. Non-white school districts receive about $23 billion less in funding annually than predominantly white school districts and Black college graduates, on average, owe $25,000 more in student loan debt than white college graduates. Almost 30% fewer Black families own their home. People of color are severely underrepresented in high-paying jobs or in the managerial workforce. They also experience higher rates of illness and death from diabetes, obesity, asthma and heart disease, and, their life expectancy is lower than white Americans. They suffer more from environmental contamination, racial profiling, police shootings, voter suppression, and unjust immigration policies. Perhaps the racial wealth gap illustrates the inequity most starkly. The US Treasury reported in 2019 that the average white family had $184,000 in wealth compared to $38.000 for Latinos and $23,000 for Black families. (Key Examples of Systemic Racism in the U.S)
Dr Kendi aptly points out the danger of racial progress rhetoric. It is not just shortsighted but undermines the considerable work remaining to dismantle existing racist policies and practices. The “Second Reconstruction” of the of the Civil Rights movement of the 1950s and 60s was needed because the First Reconstruction after the Civil War failed to build an equitable nation. A Third Reconstruction is still needed.
In his farewell address, President Obama told the nation that America is defined by a forward motion, a “constant widening of our founding creed.” Yes, the arc of the moral universe is indeed long but doesn’t bend on its own.
