Our Homeless Brother
As Jesus and his disciples were proceeding on their journey someone said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go."
Jesus answered him, “Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head." (Luke 9: 57-58)
Many would-be followers of Christ expected that he would soon set up his kingdom, and they wanted to partake of the glorious victory over their Roman oppressors. However, Jesus and his disciples stayed in the homes of those who would take them in for a while, receiving food and shelter. And then they would move on to another generous neighbor who would welcome them in. In our time, this is called “couch surfing.”
So the One we worship, the One we try to follow, the One who healed all manner of ailments of body, mind and soul, The One who served the poor and marginalized, the One who died that we might have life -- this One, was a homeless man.
This week, volunteers from Mary of Magdala served homeless families through the Faith, Family Hospitality Program. Volunteers cooked and shared a meal with their siblings in Christ, spent time listening to real life stories, perhaps spent some quality time with the children, and were overnight hosts caring for the needs that might arise for the families in shelter.
In other words, our folks served Christ. One of the local churches opened their doors to families who are homeless and helped to sustain them for a part of their journey. Next week they will then move on to another church and others will serve them a meal and talk with them about their life’s challenges. Human connections are made, people are caring for other people, hearts are open to the love shared, and many are healed.
Perhaps you may think that only the homeless families benefit from these relationships. Yet, how many lives were changed when people took in the homeless Jesus and his disciples? Healings happened, Christ consciousness was shared, there was enough, and all were satisfied.
Talk to one of our Faith, Family, Hospitality volunteers this week and find out how their life was enhanced and deepened by serving Christ in the homeless families of Fort Collins. I’m sure you’ll hear some life-changing stories.

Commemorate all souls that have gone before
Saturday, November 1
10:30 to 12 NOON
We will commemorate all the souls that have gone before us, and in particular, those we have loved and who have touched our hearts.
Some of our loses need not have been an actual death but the loss feels like a death. Bring your feelings of sadness and joy, pain and healing – all of which make us part of humanity.
Liturgy includes prayer, silence, one presentation on grief and loss and one on journeying through death into the beyond, candle lighting, and music.
Please bring a representation(s) of those you are remembering – a photo, a name, a list, a gift received, any image you create or that comes to mind for our Ofrenda table. (Ofrenda is the name of the table used during the Hispanic Day of the Dead.)
Let us pray in thanksgiving for the peace of the Spirit that comes from loving entanglements.
