Hope and Grief

Saturday, November 1, we commemorated All Saint-ed Souls Day. We brought mementos and photos. We rested in contemplation to viola, guitar, and Appalachian dulcimer gently being played by Beth Mosko*. We lit candles and snuffed them out as the lives those we remembered have seemed to be here and then gone. We meditated on crossing the veil, that thin gossamer that divides the living and the dead.

Within Luke 20: 27-40, Jesus was asked by the Sadducees, “At the resurrection, which wife will the woman be? For seven had married her.” (20:32) Jesus answered, “The children of this age get married. Those who enter the age to come and the resurrection from the dead, do not marry. Indeed, they cannot die anymore, like the angels….God is not God of the dead, but of the living. To God, and in God, all of them are alive.” (20:34-36a,38) This Sunday’s homily will have more about the veil between the living and the dead meditation by James Finley.

Before we celebrate with those behind the veil, it is necessary not to ‘bypass’ the grief that each of us have suffered. Michelle Schelle, LCSW, gave us an in-depth look at grief. Michelle is a licensed clinical social worker in both Colorado and Nebraska. Graduating in 2020, she completed her supervision at Pathways Hospice in Fort Collins. Although she has been working as a social worker for only 5 years, she began volunteering with hospice in 2015, after the death of her mother. This is where she found her passion for end-of-life and grief and loss. She has experience in palliative care, hospice care, and grief and loss. She is currently working in oncology helping patients navigate the grief of a long-term illness. When not working she enjoys her family, yoga, playing tabletop games, reading and playing with yarn.

You can read her presentation here.

And, by the way, today is election day.

Our God is the God of the living: indeed, we are all entangled,

Rev. Jane Reina
