Celebrating Juneteenth
Dear Siblings of Creation,
As we reflect on how far our national culture has come and how far we as individual people have come since June 19, 1865, there are two competing voices. One says ‘look how far we’ve come’ and the other says, ‘look how slavery has been replaced by a new Jim Crow: incarceration, food desserts, monetary unavailability, elimination of DEI, biased hiring practices, health inequity, and more.” National systems that work to constrain individual freedoms. Yet, I am encouraged by those of us who take a risk, try something new, try to suffer through the historical facts, look for ways to be relationship with people we might never have considered being in relationship with. It’s a conundrum.
Let us pray Psalm 140

Deliver me, O Giver of Breath and Life,
from the fears that beset me;
help me confront the inner shadows
That hold me in bondage, like a prisoner
who knows not freedom.
They distract from all that I yearn
to be,
and hinder the awakening of
hidden gifts
that I long to share with others.
For I desire to be a channel of peace;
to reflect the beauty of
Creation!
O, that I might manifest your love
to all whom I meet,
and mirror your mercy
and justice!
Guide me, O Beloved, that I may
become spiritually mature;
Love me into new life!
| | |
For are we not called to make Love
conscious in our lives?
To divinize the earth with
With heavenly splendor?
Reawaken my sense of wonder that
I may childlike be;
That I might flower in harmony with
the universe, and
be bearer of integrity.
I know that you stand beside those
who suffer, and
You are the Light of those
imprisoned in the darkness.
Surely You will guide us into the
new dawn,
that we may live as co-creators with You!
Joyce Rupp, Praying the Psalms, Psalm 140, pg. 281

The conundrum….What Juneteenth looks like for prisoners.
“As Black men in prison, we live the tension between celebrating the abolition of slavery and struggling inside the system that replaced it.”

“O God, surely you will guide us into the new dawn, that we may live as co-creators with you.!”
May Peace flow like a river,
Pastor Jane

Upcoming Summer Events in Fort Collins | |
ISAAC of Northern Colorado Presents...
Join us for an hour of music and learning about Larry & Joe's style, which crosses borders lyrically and sonically. Joe Troop is a Grammy-nominated Old Time Music singer-songwriter whose album with latingrass band, Che Apalache, was produced by the amazing Béla Fleck. Larry Bellorín is a legend of Llanera music who fled Venezuela seeking asylum. Relocating to the US, Larry worked long hours in construction, broke his hand in multiple places on the job and thought he'd never play music again.
And yet the universe had other plans, bringing these multi-instrumentalists together to make music on harp, upright bass, banjo, cuatro, fiddle and guitar. Watch more about their story here in this segment on PBS.
Buy your tickets now, as space for this event is very limited! See more details below.

Social Justice Reflection
On this Father’s Day, we honor those of our community (and elsewhere) who were or are protectors, teachers and encouragers; those who have picked us up when we’ve fallen, brushed us off and let us try again; those whose love is both unfathomable and unconditional; who unhesitatingly go to extreme lengths for others and who live simply for our smiles.
For those still seeking that person or who are striving to become such a one, may you find what you are looking for.
This video was played for part of the Social Justice Reflection.
Happy Father’s Day!
