REFLECTIONS ON

FOSTER CARE

In honor of Foster Care Awareness Month in May, we want to celebrate the exceptional work of our foster parents and encourage others to join this remarkable group of ordinary people who do the extraordinary each and every day.

We also chatted with Shelia Rancatore, our Executive Director of Missouri Programs, who has worked with foster parents for many years. Shelia candidly shares her experiences and the changes she has seen over the years.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU SUSPECT ABUSE

April is Childhood Abuse Prevention Month. With that in mind, David Irwin, Director of Kansas Outpatient Services, gave us some tips on what to do if you suspect a child in your care has suffered abuse or discloses abuse has taken place.

  • If you suspect abuse has occurred, do not bring it up. Instead, immediate contact your care team and explain your concerns.
  • Similarly, if a youth in your care discloses they have been abused, focus on listening rather than reacting. Do not ask too many questions and immediately contact your care team to relay what you've been told.
  • The most important thing you can do is help them build resilience. We've written a blog diving into ways you can help them achieve this.
