Today, we celebrate the Feast of St. Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr. Lawrence was a Roman deacon who was martyred in 258 AD. There are many legends about his gruesome death including the one that speaks of while he was being roasted over an open fire, he said to his captors, “I’m done on this side. Turn me over.” There are many legends that surround the saints of our faith; but, more importantly, there are the Truths we live by.
Lawrence was arrested during a time of persecution. He would sell off the community’s possessions to care for the poor and leave nothing for his captors. For this reason, his captors would force the poor he cared for to watch his gruesome martyrdom. Many would come to the faith because of his sacrifice and example.
Most of us today are not called to such a spectacular feat of sacrifice; however, there are other models of martyrdom: Those suffering at the hands of disease, hatred, bigotry, selfishness and cruelty, to name a few. We must all fight the good fight in our own journey with faith and perseverance.
May we all focus on our own journey and sacrifice for Christ.
