“Zeal for your house will consume me” are the words recalled by the disciples from the sacred scriptures. It is a fitting recollection for the Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica that we celebrate today.
The Cathedral of the Most Holy Savior and of Saints John the Baptist and the Evangelist in the Lateran (yes, a long name for a church) was the first church in Rome and therefore is the “mother of all churches.” Many folks wrongly believe that the Pope’s Cathedral is St. Peter’s; rather, St. John Lateran is the Bishop of Rome’s (the Pope) cathedral.
As we celebrate this particular church may we remember to take “zeal” in our own parish church and community as we reflect on our interconnectedness with every other throughout the world.
The journey continues…
