Dear Parishioners,
Today we celebrate the Feast of St. Matthew, the Apostle and Evangelist. As we celebrate this former tax collector, answer this question: How do you feel about the IRS? LOL. I can imagine the look on your face as you quickly have images racing through your mind of the government taking money out of your paycheck, programs wasting your hard-earned money on trains to nowhere, studies of the dating lives of mosquitoes, etc. LOL. Then, we try and protect some of that hard-earned money only to be taxed, re-taxed and taxed again! When does it stop? I digress!
Today, we celebrate a tax collector called to “rise up” to a new position. Matthew was called to become an Apostle; and, later, to tell the story in a gospel. We hear in today’s gospel, “I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” That was Matthew. And, that is us!
The journey continues.
Blessings,
Fr. Mark
