The mother of Zebedee’s sons is seeking favor from Jesus for her two sons. What mother would not desire blessings to come their children’s way? But Jesus asks if they are prepared to drink from the chalice from which he will drink. They quickly give answer assuming this correct answer will bring the temporal blessing they seek. They do not understand. Do we?
We know the chalice to which Jesus refers: the chalice of embracing all of which and who the word despises, like poverty of spirit.
This chalice is one of humility and suffering. It is one of service and one that leads to the Cross. Do we understand this when we receive from the Eucharistic presence? I know and fail all the time. This world is constantly distracting me. I suppose you are in a similar place at times as well.
Thus, forward we continue the journey, asking the favor of humility to embrace that road we travel with it’s twists and turns, dead ends and round a bout. Lord be my GPS!
Spiritual Reflection: “Can you drink the chalice that I am going to drink?”
Blessings of love,
