Refresh Coaching Skills as the Term Begins

One of the magical features of academic coaching is that it is always new and changing, as it is inherently responsive to the constant changes in students as they navigate the shifts in higher education and the world. However, even with this evolving landscape, coaches can settle into patterns, stick with comfortable styles, and favor go-to powerful questions. The beginning of a new term is a golden opportunity to refresh coaching skills by stepping back to reflect on current choices and patterns and consider some productive risks.

Coaches can turn the coaching lens inward, asking themselves questions like the following:

  • How does my typical coaching meeting proceed?

  • What element of a coaching conversation do I need to emphasize more in my work?

  • Which of the coaching tools do I shy away from -- and how can I courageously use that tool more often and more effectively?

  • Which powerful questions do I use often, and which do I use seldom or never?

  • How can I change my coaching approach productively?

Consider committing to one change this term -- using a tool, asking a certain type of question, implementing an idea -- and using a sticky note or board to put that tool, idea, or question where you can see it each day, to remind you of your goal.
