Safeguarding is not the same today as it was even 10 years ago, much less four decades ago, which is when many organizations started to realize the importance of protecting children.

In the midst of hearing new stories of sexual harassment and abuse, cultural norms, new legislation, heightened requirements from insurance companies, and ever-increasing knowledge of good and best practices, organizations need to stay on top of their safeguarding policies, procedures and training. There are plenty of options to turn to for keeping abuse prevention fresh and current. Here are five ways to keep your safeguarding up-to-date:
1) Professional Development: Our certification courses equip administrator, trainers, and board members with the goal that Plan to Protect® is not just something you do to qualify for insurance but to truly be successful in safeguarding.
2) Lifelong Learning. Each month we provide our members a deeper dive into topics relevant to your community. Here are 10 of the most popular special interest webinars on our school and member section of our website:

3) Online training: 85% of our learners prefer online learning over classroom learning. Training can be self-paced and convenient. On our online school we incorporate different learning modalities and ensure that the training is kept up-to-date. (www.plantoprotectschool.com)

4) Revamp your policies: No better time than now to revamp and refresh your policies and procedures with the updated 2022 Plan to Protect® Safeguarding Guide for Children, Youth and Adult. This new manual has every sample policy and procedure statement that you will need to ensure you are achieving a high standard of protection for every age group. (Check out our June special on a policy refresh!)
5) Add technology to your safeguarding strategy: No longer do we need to be buried alive in paperwork to demonstrate due diligence. Today organizations can use online cloud-based information management, check-in, and digital waivers systems to simplify their processes.

Meet two of our newest staff members:
We asked Lana and Brent, “Why they believe it is important to become serious about safety?”
Lana Luk – Chief Operating Officer said: Helping the vulnerable communities to prevent abuse is a great cause to work at Plan to Protect. We need to be more serious about safety before we see more terrible crises and tragedies happening in our society.
Brent Sloss – Sales and Marketing Lead said: It is a delight to assist churches, charities, and not-for-profit organizations in providing abuse prevention and protection. Safeguarding is about people and people are important.
“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.”
– William Arthur Ward
Preventing abuse and protecting the vulnerable is a skill that needs to be taught. Policies need to be implemented, and people can only act on what they’ve learned. Insurance companies require staff and volunteers to be trained in abuse prevention, and for that training to be refreshed in order to qualify for abuse coverage.
Training does not need to be boring. It should include more than reading a policy or listening to a lecture. The goal is to make sure that everyone in an organization is on the same page, and we want to make sure everyone enjoys the process it takes to get there. Abuse is serious and heartbreaking. However, we aim to make learning about abuse prevention a beneficial and enjoyable experience.
Qualified trainers are highly encouraged to utilize creative methods of training to engage volunteers and staff and to keep training new and engaging for different learning styles and interests. Creative methods can include discussions, videos, scenarios, games, puzzles, etc.
Plan to Protect® Train the Trainer Certification courses are designed to aid in the qualification process and to equip the Trainer with Plan to Protect® PowerPoints, teaching notes and extensive creative method ideas for both initial Orientation training and Refresher training. Plan to Protect® Trainers should be re-certified every three years to receive the most updated training materials in order to provide the most current research and content for your volunteers and staff. Plan to Protect® should never be boring, rather it should be inspiring and fresh every year!
