Many in our parish have asked how to respond to the urgent need to help refugees from Afghanistan, many of whom fled their home with little notice and few belongings. As part of a newly-formed ASC Refugee Welcome Program, see below for three concrete ways to show Christ’s love to our Afghan neighbors. Do one, two, or all three! Contact Shireen David, Director of Mission and Outreach for more information.

Three ways to serve:

1. ASC has partnered with Lutheran Social Services (National Capital Area) to serve the rapidly-growing Afghan refugee community in the DC area. Please take a look at the Urgent Needs list, below;
-OR- use this Amazon Shopping List;
-OR- use the shopping list available at the Front Desk.
Bring your clearly-marked items to the Great Hall on Sunday, 9/26, from 9:30 a.m. on, for a special Blessing.

The most URGENT and current needs are:
  • Gift cards (any denomination - Visa, Giant, Safeway, Target, Walmart, Harris Teeter, Lotte, Uber, Lyft, and Aldi);
  • Backpacks and school supplies. See list HERE;
  • SIM cards (the Mint Mobile Wireless Plan available on Amazon is a good option);
  • Laptops – NEW only;
  • Smartphones – NEW or refurbished only;
  • Brooms with dustpans, mops, ironing boards, hangers, and pillows – NEW only.

2. Join the new ASC Refugee Welcome Team by emailing Shireen ASAP! This team will act as a co-advisory panel - along with the Mission & Outreach Team - in matters relating to refugees; engage with the wider parish about ways to serve; and help meet the needs of the refugee community in our area.

3. Give online directly to Lutheran Social Services by clicking HERE.

Thank you for the blessing that you are and will be to our newest neighbors and, especially, for Sharing Christ’s Love with them!
Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.  For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.’ Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink? And when did we see You as a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? And when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it for one of the least of these brothers or sisters of Mine, you did it for Me.’
Matthew 25: 34 -40
