We write today to update you regarding the deaths of Alene Tate, the Reverend Sally Herring, Deacon, and Anne Rowthorn. Information regarding their services can be found below. We give God great thanks for each of their lives and their dedication to the life and ministry of The Episcopal Church in Connecticut. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Into your hands, O merciful Savior, we commend your servants: Alene Tate, Sally Herring, and Anne Rowthorn. Acknowledge, we humbly beseech you, a sheep of your own fold, a lamb of your own flock, a sinner of your own redeeming. Receive them into the arms of your mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light. Amen.

Alene Marie Roberts Tate

Alene Marie Roberts Tate passed to glory on August 18, 2023, the second anniversary of her husband's ascension. Alene died at Connecticut Hospice (CT Hospice) in Branford, the first hospice in the nation which she helped found 50 years ago. Alene was born on a ranch just outside of Garden City, Kansas. Alene pursued an outstanding career with the United States Government and devoted herself to extensive volunteerism for her church and community. At St. John’s, North Haven, Alene served several terms on the Vestry and became the first female Senior Warden in the then 228-year history of that parish. In the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut, she served on numerous committees and offices, including the Standing Committee, the Executive Council, and Committees for Election of several Diocesan Bishops. For her years of outstanding service, in 1989 she was awarded the "Bishop's Citation for Service to Church and Community." In 1993, Alene was instrumental in the election of the first black Bishop Diocesan, Clarence Coleridge, Thirteenth Bishop Diocesan of Connecticut.

A wake will be held at the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Avenue on Friday August 25 from 4 - 7 pm. The Funeral service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church 3 Trumbull Place North Haven, CT at 11am Saturday, August 26.

The Reverend Sally Herring, Deacon

On the morning of May 10, 2023, Sarah “Sally” Carroll Herring passed away peacefully. She was 82 years old. Sally was born in Norwich, Connecticut on April 14, 1941. In mid-life, she started a new career as a church secretary at Christ Episcopal Church in Greenwich, Connecticut. Sally gave her life to Christ Church and the congregation and community reciprocated by providing her with the spiritual and family community that was the foundation of her magnificent life. Sally was so dedicated to her faith and community that in her later years she became an ordained deacon in the Episcopal Church. The idea of giving back and helping others was a guiding force for her life. She was a true servant of her community. After being ordained, she started her outreach with a new opportunity at The Nathaniel Witherell, a health care facility in Greenwich, where she could work with seniors to provide the finest care and support that everyone is entitled to in their golden years. After retirement and a few health problems, she moved from Connecticut to Newport Beach, California to live with her son Pen and his wife Wendy. She joined St James Episcopal Church in Newport Beach and helped the church with their weekly services. Sally was a true light from heaven.

Anne Long Wheeler Rowthorn

Anne Long Wheeler Rowthorn of Salem, CT sadly left us on July 28, 2023, at age 84. Anne was born on May 19, 1939, in Boston, MA and grew up in Marblehead, MA. Anne married the love of her life, The Rt. Rev. Jeffery W. Rowthorn, in 1963 in Salem, Massachusetts having met him when they were both counselors at a summer camp in San Francisco. Anne’s love of the outdoors, her deep Christian faith, and admiration of indigenous spiritual practices were linked in her vocation as a writer specializing in ecology and eco-spirituality. During her travels and research, she collected ecological literature from the great cultures and religions of the world that she compiled in her books God’s Good Earth (co-written with Jeffery); Earth and All the Stars; Song of the Universe; Feast of the Universe. She also authored The Wisdom of John Muir: 100+ Selections from the letters, Journals, and Essays of the Great Naturalist (Wilderness Press). Her book, Your Daily Life Is Your Temple was designated a best spirituality book of the year in 2006 by Spirituality & Practice. Her latest book written with Jeffery, Liturgies of Lament, will be published posthumously.
