Important Info

Prom 2024 Eligibility

The West High School Prom is coming up on April 27th! This is a special event for our Juniors and Seniors and Administration would like to be transparent regarding eligibility for students to attend.

  • Students who are on the ‘Restricted Regent’ list within the week prior to the event are not allowed to attend.
  • Students who have a behavior infraction within the week prior to the event are not allowed to attend.

Should students buy tickets prior to and then end up ineligible to attend Prom, there will be no refunds.

Attendance Calls

In order to streamline absence reporting we ask our parents/guardians to use one of two options.

This will remove heavy volumes of calls from our SLC offices which will allow us to be better available to assist our families/students immediate needs throughout the school day.

  • If your student is going to be absent or late to school, please use the online reporting link below or call the attendance line by 8:00am.

  • **If you are excusing your student for an appointment or segment of the day please communicate to your student the exact time frame you are excusing them for. If the student leaves early or is late returning from the time reported by the parent/guardian that extra time will not be excused until the parent/guardian submits a correction on the Online Reporting Page or Attendance Phone Line.

  • If a student has been mistakenly marked absent in a class that they attended, they will need to speak directly to the teacher and ask them to submit an online Attendance Update Form.

  • Athletes have 5 days after being marked absent to get attendance cleared to avoid having to sit out an event.

  • Students are strongly encouraged to look at their attendance in Infinite Campus daily.

Equity Symposium Success!

Our 1st annual Equity Symposium was a success! Feedback from students, staff, and community leaders has been overwhelmingly positive. Our West HS community is grateful to the 100ish community organizers, politicians, scholars, and performers who facilitated engaging workshops for our students and staff. If you’d like to get involved with next year’s symposium, please reach out to -

Sarah Quinn

La Juventud

West students visited La Juventud - a Youth Workshop/Career Fair Workshop for our 11th and 12th grade Latinx students. This was an opportunity for our students to see Latinx leaders of different industries and careers such as STEM, realty, trucking/CDL licenses, electricians, construction, translation/interpretation, auto mechanics, and Madison police Latinx leaders. Sessions contained information regarding apprenticeship and future career opportunities.

West Model United Nations

West Model United Nations students were invited to the Northwestern MUN Conference (April 11-14) where we squared off in diplomatic competition and collaboration with 45 top schools from around the country. West delegates maintained our high standard of quality and ethics-driven diplomacy. Highlighting our efforts, MUN club members Bethany Ehlenbach and Zahra Gokhale brought home position paper awards in the High Commission for Refugees and Joint Crisis Biafra committees, respectively.

WEST MUN will finish off its 23-24 season in May with one final conference at the University of Wisconsin Madison; contact officers or Advisor Mr. Watson for more information.

HOSA Future Health Professionals

Our Madison West HOSA Future Health Professionals chapter returned Tuesday from the State Leadership Conference. The following students qualified to advance to the International Conference in Houston, TX this June:

  • Grace Huang - 1st place in Nutrition
  • Dinghan Guo - 2nd place in Behavioral Health
  • Evan Blonien - 2nd place in Physical Therapy
  • Riley Holdbrook, Peilin Hu, August Peters, Ayelet Blum - 2nd place in HOSA Bowl
  • Rajeev Agarwal - 3rd place in Epidemiology

Freya Sherer, Megan Finando, Naon Oh, and Isabelle Gao finished as alternates in their events and will advance to internationals if a spot becomes available.

In addition, Megan Finando was elected as the Wisconsin State HOSA Vice President for 2024 - 2025! Please congratulate all of these students!

Thank You Volunteers!

Sophomore students had the opportunity to have their resumés reviewed by professionals during Thursday’s ACP lesson. Thank you to the 25 volunteers who showed up to offer important advice and feedback to our students!

Lockdown Drill

At Madison West High School, we continue to put safety and security at the forefront of our work, taking every opportunity to refine our systems and protocols whenever appropriate. To ensure that those systems and protocols are as effective as possible, and in line with our District Safety Plan, it is highly important to conduct practice drills on a regular basis so that students and staff know what to do in the event of an emergency.

Per Wisconsin Statute 118.07(4) (cp) - Each school board and the governing body of each private school shall ensure that, at each school building regularly occupied by pupils, pupils are drilled, at least annually, in the proper response to an active threat event in accordance with the school safety plan in effect for that school building.

In MMSD we practice our response to an active threat event by completing lockdown drills, which are part of the Standard Response Protocol created by the I love U Guys Foundation. A Lockdown is initiated in response to a threat or hazard happening inside the school building.

This is to inform you that we will be holding our Lockdown Drill on May 1st during the 2nd to 3rd hour transition period at approximately 10:11am.

We are mindful of the sensitivities associated with this type of drill and want to make sure that we are balancing your student’s safety with their emotional wellbeing.

A few important notes about the Semester 2 Lockdown drill:

  • Prior to the drill, staff and students will spend time reviewing the Lockdown Training. If you would like to see view the SRP lessons, please visit: https://www.madison.k12.wi.us/office-of-school-safety/standard-response-protocol
  • This drill will occur during a period of transition. Students will follow adult directions and enter the nearest lockable classroom as quickly as possible. If students cannot find an unlocked classroom, they should find a place to hide; they should not go classroom to classroom. Students could self-evacuate. If students decide to self-evacuate they must remain on campus until the drill is completed.
  • Once behind a locked door, staff and students will calmly move to the safe zone of their classroom and remain silent. Teachers will ensure classroom doors are locked, turn lights off, and account for all students. Any classes taking place outdoors during the drill will follow the evacuation protocol and remain outdoors until the drill is complete.
  • During the drill, no one (including visitors and families) will be permitted to enter or leave the building.
  • The drill is presented as practice and is learning-based, devoid of elements that may cause a student to feel fear or anxiety (no banging on doors or windows, loud noises, simulated threats, etc.).
  • If requested by our school, members of the MMSD Office of School Safety and Madison Police Department will observe the drill and debrief with staff afterward. Teachers will also debrief with students after the drill.

While we do not anticipate needing to use this procedure in our schools, it is incredibly important for all our students and staff to complete the Lockdown drill, to practice staying safe. Please talk with your child about the Lockdown drill, emphasizing that it is only practice, but very important. (Here is a helpful resource for talking about school safety with your student.)

Thank you for your continued partnership.

Sincerely,
