From Mr. Kigeya

Dear Madison West scholars and families,

We hope this message finds you filled with excitement and anticipation for another academic year at Madison West! As we gather our thoughts, we cannot help but feel an overwhelming sense of pride and enthusiasm for the Madison West community.

First and foremost, we are thrilled to announce that our school building has undergone an extensive renovation during the summer break. This exciting transformation has resulted in numerous additional classrooms, conference rooms, offices, and athletic spaces. These enhancements aim to provide an even better learning environment for our students, allowing for increased collaboration, engagement, and overall student success.

In the spirit of new beginnings, we are also pleased to inform you that fall sports are currently underway. We want to emphasize that the safety and enjoyment of our scholars and participants/spectators are paramount to us. We are fully committed to ensuring that every game is conducted in a manner that promotes fair play, sportsmanship, and respect for all involved. Therefore, we kindly remind all students that they are expected to adhere to the MMSD and Madison West student expectations during athletic events.

Football Games & how to show up

We want scholars to pay particular attention to how they show up at football games.  Football is fun and exciting for all participants. As Regent scholars, we show up to cheer and root for our student athletes, we’re not there to tear others down.  As an inclusive school, we take immense pride in our diversity and unwavering commitment to being anti-racist, anti-homophobic, and simply anti-hate! We firmly believe that every individual within our community deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, including the fans and opponents across the field, pitch or court. Yes, this includes Middleton.  As such, carefully note that bigoted language and poor behavior have no place at Madison West, West events, and West football games.

Also, our West team expects that our scholars attend games full of cheer and school spirit, not other intoxicants and hate.

So…

  • Arriving at games under the influence, consuming/sharing drugs, vape pens, cigarettes or any mode-altering stuff is a no-no.

Scholars who do will be asked to leave (we might have to call your parents to come get you).  So, think clearly, carefully and consider your safety and that of others.

We encourage you to refrain from being added to the Restricted Regent list.  Making poor choices will land you there.  For those that don’t know, the Restricted Regent list means scholars may face consequences.  For example, Homecoming is an amazing tradition and experience at West.  I would hate for any scholar to miss out on activities and the Homecoming Dance.  So, again make good choices.

If you see fellow scholars slipping up, correct them or report them.  We kindly request that each and every one of you remain mindful of your behavior both in and out of school. Your actions reflect not only upon yourself but upon our entire Madison West community. Let’s strive to create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere where all students feel safe, valued, and supported. Together, we can build a community that celebrates our differences and promotes a positive learning environment for everyone.

Once again, Welcome Back to Madison West Scholars! We look forward to an incredible academic year filled with growth, achievement, and memorable experiences. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

Go Regents!

Sincerely,

Dan Kigeya

Online Enrollment Information

Online enrollment for the 23-24 school year is open. Families should complete the enrollment process and pay school fees 100% virtually as the West building remains closed until the end of August. You can access the MMSD online enrollment at this link. Registration and Enrollment

For returning families

Families with students continuing in MMSD will complete the process fully online. If you need to verify date of birth and/or parent-student relationship or have a change to key information you should contact Felissia Jackson at 608-204-3073.

For new families

Families completing the application for new students should contact Felissia Jackson at 608-204-3073 to schedule an online appointment with a school counselor. New families can use the enrollment checklist as a guide to help them prepare the enrollment documents they need for their student’s enrollment.

Picture Day Details

In an attempt to streamline the ID and yearbook picture process while the building is still closed, Lifetouch will be taking pictures of West students at Hamilton Middle School. Hamilton is located at 4801 Waukesha Street, and students should enter through door 7.

If you are unable to make your allotted time per your last name, it is okay to come during a different time slot, but please be mindful and stick with your time if you are able to prevent the lines from getting too long.

If you purchased the athletic pass during online enrollment, please have your receipt printed or saved electronically so this can be added to your ID.

If you have any questions, reach out to Kirsten Johnson at ksjohnson@madison.k12.wi.us or 608-204-4116.

Class Schedules

Class schedules are now available in Infinite Campus starting on Monday, August 21st.  New Regents will also receive their Smaller Learning Community (SLC) and counselor assignment at that time.

The West counseling team has implemented a new schedule change policy in an attempt to keep changes to a minimum and prioritize students who need technical changes to their schedule.   The schedule change electronic form will be available after schedules are released on August 21st.

Freshman Orientation Day

We look forward to welcoming our West High School Freshman Class of 2027 to Freshman Orientation Day on Friday, September 1st. All other grade levels will start school on Tuesday, September 5th. On this day, students will get a tour of the school, walk their schedule, try their locker, learn more about the school year, sign up for clubs and extracurricular activities, and meet peers!

Students should bring with them:

  • Homeroom room # (page 2 of this document)
  • SLC assignment (Line 10 on your class schedule)
  • Small amounts of money (optional!) – there may be West gear under $25 available for purchase at the Carnival of Clubs
  • Comfortable clothes & shoes – it’s an active day with lots of walking.
  • A backpack to store your chromebook and planner that you will be receiving
  • Water bottle

Linked here is the detailed schedule for the day as well as homeroom locations for all Small Learning Communities (SLC). SLC assignments can be found on Line 10 of a student’s class schedule.

If you have any questions about Freshman Orientation Day, please reach out to Katie Medema - Kmedema@madison.k12.wi.us

Important Info

Buses

This year all Madison Metro buses will again use Regent Street for drop off and pick up. Only specialized transportation vans will use Van Hise Street.

The schedule for the Metro school supplemental ‘W-routes’ can be viewed at this link

Students can purchase Metro bus passes at this link. District-provided Metro passes are available for students who:

1-Reside within the boundaries of the school attendance area

2-Reside more than one and one-half (1.5) miles from their attendance area school.

3-Have demonstrable financial need, including qualifying for free or reduced lunch.

Students who qualify for a district-provided bus pass will be able to pick them up at West during the first week of school and will be allowed to ride for free until bus passes are distributed.

1st Week of School Schedule

Our Senior Citizen Leadership Team has been working hard this summer to welcome all students back to West! They have been critical in the development of Culture Setting lessons that will help all Regents have a successful school year.  To ensure that all students are informed of expectations, policies, and procedures, we will have an altered bell schedule during the first week of school. Topics covered include: What it means to be a Regent; Getting to & around West; Digital Citizenship & Student Support, and an overview of our Behavior Education Plan.

Daily Bell Schedule

See our daily bell schedule here - remember that all Mondays have an early release time!

Lockers By Request Only

Due to construction, many of our lockers will be out of commission for the 2023-2024 school year. For that reason, all current locker assignments will be ended, and students can request a locker using this form. Once requested, students will be sent an email with their locker assignment before the start of the school year.

Electronic Device Policy

As we move into the '23-24 school year, we look to improve the overall culture and climate of the building. In part, we will be implementing an updated 'Electronic Device Policy.'

If you have questions regarding this policy, please reach out to your Assistant Principal or Alicia Grant (Family and Community Engagement Coordinator).
