From Mr. Kigeya

Dear Regent Community,

We hope this message finds you well.

Tomorrow, September 1st, is the first day of school.  It will be for 9th graders only.  Upon arriving at school, all freshmen students should report to the cafeteria for their breakfast and Small Learning Community (SLC) T-shirt.

Friday, September 2nd All students will return.

Regular School Hours:

8:15 - 2:36PM (Mondays)

8:15 - 3:37PM (Tues.-Thurs.)

As students return to school they will be receiving a lot of information.  The first message is about Safety.

Safety is our 1st Priority

We want everyone to know that West is currently an active construction site.  That said, please know that the designated learning spaces that students and staff will use are Safe.  We have worked hard to separate the teaching sections of the school from those under construction.  Construction areas will be blocked off by walls and have signs that say Construction Area: No Access.  A few other areas (exposed ceiling tiles are for light touch renovation space for students and staff to use.) It is imperative that students follow and adhere to the construction signs.

Additionally, students should never intentionally wander or venture into construction areas.  Doing so means jeopardizing their safety and/or life.  Students that intentionally venture into these spaces will receive school consequences.

Teaching and Learning Update (Cell Phone Policy)

To ensure students receive a robust and rigorous education, we will be instituting a cell phone policy.  (The policy includes earbuds, headphones, and other electronic devices)  For more, please read the 22-23 Madison West Cell phone Policy.

Parking

Those students lucky enough to drive have to be mindful of parking changes.  Due to construction, the City of Madison has instituted new designated parking areas around West.  Please follow the new signs.

Additionally, the new parking lot on Van Hise (attached to West) is ADA, admin and staff only parking.  The lot near the athletic fields is also staff only parking.  Though tempting, please don’t risk getting a ticket or your car towed.

We look forward to connecting with all our Madison West students in the next two days.  Onwards.

Sincerely,

Dan Kigeya

Principal

Happening Now

Lockers

Students who requested lockers should have received locker assignments by email today. With any questions, reach out to Natalie at nkloranger@madison.k12.wi.us.

You may still request a locker if you haven’t done so! Please fill out this form and you will be contacted ASAP with your assignment.

Schedule Changes

Student class schedules are available to view in Infinite Campus. If you need to make a schedule change, please fill out this electronic form. While we'd like to be able to accommodate all requests, scheduling is complex and we cannot guarantee that your request will be approved. They will be considered based on impact on graduation requirements, date they were submitted, and space/staffing in requested courses.

Covid Updates

  • The Accelerated Labs testing site at West will only be open this year from 12:15 to 3:15 pm Monday through Friday. Only MMSD staff and students can be tested at this site. Testing will only be performed for symptomatic staff/students and close contacts. No screening testing will be performed. Prior to testing each person will have to create an account on the Covid Connect 2 website. Here are the directions how to set up an account: https://covidconnect2.wi.gov/#/login
  • English: https://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/publications/p03280.pdf
  • Hmong : https://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/publications/p03280h.pdf
  • Espanol:  https://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/publications/p03280s.pdf
  • Mask wearing in the school building is highly recommended but not required. If staff/students are experiencing any respiratory symptoms, masks must be worn regardless of testing status or results. Masks should also be worn for 10 days after you have been exposed to someone with Covid-19 (close contact) regardless of immunization status..
  • If you are ill or diagnosed with Covid-19 please fill out the district’s health screener, so that staff from the district’s Covid Response Team can contact you to discuss next steps.
  • There is no longer quarantining or contact tracing after exposure to Covid-19 regardless of vaccine status. Again, if you are determined to be a close contact you should wear a mask for 10 days after the exposure and get tested for Covid 5 days after the exposure.

Buses

Bus Routes

Metro Bus Passes

  • Metro will allow students to ride free the first week of school in order for bus passes to be obtained.
  • Families needing to purchase Madison Metro semester bus passes should contact Metro Transit.
  • Students who qualify for a district-funded bus pass can fill out the request form that was emailed to them yesterday, and then can pick up their pass in their SLC office once they receive an email that it’s ready. Students qualify if they receive free/reduced lunch and live more than 1.5 miles from West.
  • Students needing to purchase the 10-ride bus cards may do so in their SLC office.

Drop-0ff/Pick-up

We are so excited to welcome our staff and students back to West to see all of the construction that has been done over the summer.  West The old Library and Van Hise Gym are now classroom spaces that will be used while other parts of the building remain under construction this fall.

Because of the ongoing construction, there will be changes to student drop off and pick up this school year.

Bus drop off/pick up

Metro buses will continue to drop off students on Regent Street, but will now pick up students at two different locations.  Please look at the map below to determine if your student will catch their bus on:

  • Regent Street: (W3 Arboretum, W1 Tokay, W3 Hill Farms, W1 Shorewood, W1 Mineral Point)

  • Van Hise Avenue: (W1 Nakoma, W3 Leopold, W5 Burr Oaks, W5 Wingra, W7 Olin.

  • Fitchburg: yellow buses will load on Ash Street.

You can determine your student’s bus route to school by following this link to the Metro website

Parent drop off/pick up

All parent drop off and pick up between 7:30 am-4:00pm should occur on Ash Street.   Please access Ash Street coming from the east on Allen Street as turns onto Van Hise Street from Highland  will be prohibited after 2pm in order to accomodate the Metro buses.

Here is the West parking and traffic plan in more detail.

Upcoming Events

Freshmen First Day Info

The first day of school (Thursday, September 1st) is for Freshmen only.  Here is the schedule for the day.  Also, on this doc you will find details for the day.

Students will first come to the cafeteria for a free t-shirt and then they will go to their homeroom for the day.

Please help your Freshmen start off strong by knowing which of the four Student Learning Communities(SLC)  they have been assigned too.  They will need to know which SLC to find their homeroom tomorrow when they arrive.  You will find the name of your SLC on line 10 in your schedule in Infinite Campus.

Students do not need to bring their backpack or any supplies - we do recommend bringing a water bottle! Students will get to have a tour, walk their schedule, learn more about the school year, and meet peers!

Sophomore, Junior, Senior First Day Info

The first day of school for Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors is Friday, September 2nd. Printed schedules will be available and IDs will be distributed.
