West High Orchestra Concert - November 2nd

From Mr. Kigeya

Dear West High School students,

I hope this email finds you well. I wanted to take a moment to share with you and your families the incredible things I’ve been able to witness recently.

In the last few days during my observations, I have witnessed passion for learning, high levels of student engagement, amazing peer-to-peer interactions, critical thinking, and ultimately spaces full of rich, deep learning. I can also report, students, you’re doing an amazing job keeping those phones off and away! Double-digit classroom visits today and zero phones. I hope I didn't just jinx it. It was truly inspiring to see you and our teachers working together to create vibrant and dynamic learning environments.

Moving on…

As we continue the march to break, we mustn’t look past this Thursday and Friday’s parent-teacher conferences. These conferences will provide a valuable opportunity for us to come together and discuss your progress. Supporting you in partnership with your families is a shared responsibility that we take seriously because their involvement is crucial to your academic success. So, we look forward to spending some time with them.

Additionally, I want to emphasize the importance of developing and maintaining good learning habits. As such, in the next few weeks, we will be focusing on reducing tardies and increasing regular attendance. Most of you are doing great in this regard, others can do better.  Because we know regular attendance and punctuality are essential for your success, we will be doubling down our focus in these areas. So look for more messaging around our attendance initiatives in the coming days.

Lastly, let me end by saying I’m so proud of the hard work and dedication that I’m seeing in all of you. You’re all tired, I can see that too.  Remember that a much-needed break is right around the corner.  Let’s keep the focus, and the break will be here in no time.

Onward and upwards!

Best Regards,

Dan Kigeya

Principal

West High School

Winter Celebration

Regent Families -

As part of our commitment to building and sustaining relationships at West High School, we are spending time together as a school community on the afternoon of December 19th celebrating the hard work our students have been doing this semester.  Students will be given the opportunity to select from several different activities that will be overseen by West staff and spend time together before we head into the winter break.  Some of the activities will include opportunities to play games, make crafts, create holiday cards for local senior centers, or engage in physical activities.  To create this opportunity for our students, we will be running an alternative bell schedule and students will be given the opportunity to leave at lunch or stay for the fun activities scheduled.  Lunch will be provided for students and regular transportation will be running as scheduled.

If you would like to support this opportunity for our students, we would gladly accept financial donations or donation of materials and/or snacks for the celebration. Donations can be dropped off at the Welcome Center during regular school hours from Dec 15th-19th.  If you plan to donate, please complete this form to help us in planning what we will need to purchase for this event.

ACCESS Testing

ACCESS Test of English Proficiency!

For our students with multiple languages at West High School, the window for their state-mandated test of English proficiency opens on December 4 and runs through January 26th. Check student and parent email for the appointed test date, time, and location, and do your best to show off language growth and multilingualism! Attendance Refresh & ALC (Alternative Learning Center)

We have a new attendance strategy starting on Monday, November 27.

Why does attendance matter?

West is committed to being an intentionally anti-racist school community, so that all of our students feel seen, heard, and valued, and develop skills to be successful, so that they graduate on time. To do this, students need to attend all of their classes on time. Attendance matters because we want all of our students to succeed.

We know that daily attendance on time contributes to the following positive outcomes

  • Passing grades and credit attainment
  • Increased sense of belonging
  • Increased preparedness for post-secondary goals
  • Greater opportunities to develop knowledge and skills
  • On-time graduation

What will we do to support attendance?

Starting on Monday, November 27, in order to support our students to attend classes on time, adults at West will be in the hallways to escort students to class. Students who are in the halls during class time will be escorted to the Alternative Learning Center. We will contact parents, and help the student plan for a successful return to class. Students who are in the hallways multiple times may also be assigned a suspension.

Restricted Regents and Athletic Events

Families, as we move into the Winter athletic season, it is important to reiterate that students who are on the Restricted Regent list are not allowed to attend extracurricular activities, including Athletics Events. Students who are Restricted are those who did not serve a lunch detention for their tardies the week before. If a student who is on the Restricted Regents list attempts to enter an Athletic event, they will be turned away.

Students receive a detention by being tardy four or more times within the week. Families are notified on Monday of whether their student(s) are Restricted/need to serve a lunch detention.
