From Mr. Kigeya

Madison West Students and Families,

Welcome to the first full day of the 2023-24 school year! We are thrilled to have ALL of our students back with us today..

Last Friday, we kicked off the school year on a positive note with our 9th graders. It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm and energy in our new, larger building. Students had the opportunity to sign up for clubs, explore their classes, and begin building the foundation for their high school journey.

In the coming weeks, our focus will be on establishing a strong culture of learning that centers around relationships between students and staff. We firmly believe that fostering these connections will not only stimulate curiosity but also enhance each student's capacity for intellectual growth and academic confidence.

As part of our strategy to create a conducive learning environment, we have implemented a cell phone and electronic device policy. We understand that this policy may cause some initial disruptions and conversations, but please know that our primary goal is to ensure that all students can learn at the highest level possible. By minimizing distractions, we aim to create a focused and productive atmosphere for everyone.

Lastly, as we settle into our new building, we will continue to work on providing the best possible educational experience for ALL West scholars and your children. We appreciate the support from our scholars and our families in helping us achieve our educational goals.

To our families, thank you for entrusting us with your child's education, and here's to a successful and rewarding 2023-24 school year at The Madison West High School!

Sincerely,

Dan Kigeya

Principal

Madison West High School

Important Info

Week 1 Bell Schedule & Lessons

During the first week of school, September 5-8, we will have an altered bell schedule in order to build a positive school culture and ensure that all Regents are aware of important policies and procedures. Here is that bell schedule. Students will be emailed lessons daily, and parents/guardians will be emailed all of the lessons on Friday September 8th.  They will also be housed on the Student Resource Hub for easy access throughout the year.

23-34 Madison West High School Bus Pass Request Form

Please use this form to request a district funded bus pass. Please note, you must meet district eligibility requirements in order to qualify for the pass.

Students, you will receive an email when your bus pass is ready to be picked up. Feel free to stop by your SLC office before school, during lunch, or afterschool to check the status of your bus pass.

Attendance Reporting

In order to streamline absence reporting we ask our parents and guardians to use one of two options for the 2023-24 school year.

This will remove heavy volumes of calls from our SLC offices which will allow us to be better available to assist our families/students immediate needs throughout the school day.

If your student is going to be absent or late to school, please use the online reporting link below or call the attendance line by 8:00am.

If you are excusing your student for an appointment or segment of the day please communicate to your student the exact time frame you are excusing them for. If the student leaves early or is late returning from the time reported by the parent/guardian the extra time will not be excused until the parent/guardian submits a correction on the Online Reporting Page or Attendance Phone Line.

Locker Update

Due to construction, many of our lockers will be out of commission for the 2023-2024 school year. For that reason, all current locker assignments have ended and students can request a locker using this form. Once requested, students will be sent an email with their locker assignment.

Please fill out this form ONLY if you are requesting a locker. Depending on interest, students may have a locker partner.

Schedule Changes

The last day to begin a new Semester 1 class is Friday, Sept 8th. Students may drop an extra course through the 7th week of the semester for a study/resource hall.

Students who wish to change their schedule should review the Schedule Change Policy first.

If the type of schedule change being requested is permitted in the schedule change policy (see Technical vs. Non-Technical schedule changes), students must fill out the Schedule Change Request Form (Closes Sept 8th, end of school day).

ALL REQUESTS must be submitted via the form. Do not email your school counselor with your request - counselors will not make schedule changes requested via email.

Students may also look at this flow chart to help them determine which schedule changes will be allowed. Even if a schedule change is permitted, it is not guaranteed that the request will be granted (for example, if a class is full or does not fit on a student schedule).

This school year, all students taking Geometry and Algebra 2/Trig will have access to and be enrolled in the Honors section as a way of giving all students the opportunity to reach their potential in math. More information will be provided from the math teacher once the school year begins.

Check out the Welcome Back Counseling Newsletter for information on all things back to school!

Electronic Device Policy

As we start the school year, we are paying close attention to creating safe, welcoming and engaging learning environments. This includes having a clear policy on electronic devices.

The respectful, non-disruptive use of electronic devices such as, but not limited to, cell phones, AirPods, earbuds, other bluetooth headphones, smart watches, etc., will only be permitted before and after school, between classes, and during lunch.

Staff may allow the use of electronic devices for instructional purposes. Classroom staff will manage and oversee student’s usage of electronic devices during class.

Electronic Device Guidelines:

  1. If students choose to bring electronic devices to school, they should be kept off and away in a backpack and out of sight during class time. Students may place their electronic devices in a secure location prior to the start of class and retrieve them at the end of class.
  2. If an electronic device is visible or heard, it will be stored in a secure location that is visible to the student.
  3. If a student gives an electronic device to a staff member when asked, the student may have the electronic device back at the end of the class period. Students are responsible for retrieving their electronic device at the end of the class period.
  4. If a student refuses to give a device to a staff member when asked, the student will have their device confiscated by a member of the behavior response team. Students may pick their electronic device up at lunch if they violated the policy in the morning, or at the end of the school day if they violated the policy in the afternoon. Electronic devices that are confiscated will be safe and secure in the [OFFICE TBD].
  5. Parents/guardians will be notified that the student had their electronic device confiscated during class time via robocall.
  6. Once a student has 5 infractions of the electronic device policy, they will be required to meet with their identified support team and parent/guardian to create a support/intervention plan in order to establish alternative ways of meeting the intended goals within the policy.
  7. If the student escalates in their behavior, causing a distraction or an interruption to the instructional environment or if it leads to the violation of other district rules or policies, the student will be removed from class and subject to other disciplinary actions as outlined in the District’s Behavior Education Plan.
  8. In the event of an immediate emergency, parents/guardians should contact the school’s Main Office at 204-4100.

PLEASE NOTE:

Students who possess a device do so at their own risk to possible loss and/or damage. Madison Metropolitan School District will not be responsible for the recovery of lost or stolen electronic devices.

Madison West High School Administration reserves the right to update this policy at any time.

If you have questions regarding this policy, please reach out to your Assistant Principal or Alicia Grant (Family and Community Engagement Coordinator).
