2017 Region 10 Conference
Mustang Maddy Mustang Maddy was the highlight of the 2017 Region 10 Conference hosted by the Front Range Exceptional Equestrians and CSU in Fort Collins, CO, May 5-7. A big THANK YOU to all our presenters, state chairs and CSU Equestrian Club for helping make the conference a huge success! We had over 100 attendees with very positive feedback on the skills of presenters and amazing presentations. Mustang Maddy educated, entertained and inspired the attendees as she introduced us to her liberty team of formerly wild mustangs and took us through the story and struggles of these living legends of American history. Maddy helped us learn how to understand the world through the eyes of a mustang, and all breeds of horses as she discussed equine behavior and psychology through her amazing liberty demonstrations. Attached is a video for your viewing and website with the Liberty Clinic schedule to acquire CE hours if you are interested: www.madisonshambaugh.com

Horses With Heart

Horses Help
This summer we partnered with the AZ Humane Society to provide a Hoof N' Woof: Super Hero Week summer enrichment program.

This was a five-day collaboration between HH and AHS. The kids focused on all things barn, horse, and goat in the morning and then transitioned to AHS in the afternoon.

In the morning the kids learned about parts of the horse, the equine digestive system, the equine skeletal system, calculating out how much feed a horse eats, identifying different feed types, goat digestive systems, barn maintenance, equine communication, riding, and grooming.

In the afternoon the kids learned about the importance of spay and neutering, clicker training (positive reinforcement training), environment enrichment, and learned about the different needs of several different animals like rabbits, ferrets, dogs, cats, hissing cockroaches, etc., while they interacted with them during "hands on" time.

Horses Help and AHS is working on building a presentation for a regional or national conference as this program was a huge success and a great collaboration opportunity within the animal industry.

Horsin' Around Therapeutic Riding Center
"Special-needs kids get a taste of the rodeo life" at event sponsored by Rodeo De Santa Fe June 17! Horsin' Around Therapeutic Riding Center and Listening Horse program riders participated in the 1st annual Santa Fe Exceptional rodeo. A few dozen volunteers manned the seven different stations while the all abilities participants were guided through a barrel racing and pole bending pattern, riding a mechanical bull, learning how to rope a steer dummy and riding the steer head train around the arena. According to the Santa Fe New Mexican, "Mary Jo Pope (rodeo treasurer) credited Debbie Lanphere (OT Four Points Therapy in Corrales, NM) and Carolyn Siebert for helping to give the event such a good start through their connection with the special needs community!" The purpose of the rodeo was to offer the opportunity for special needs kids and adults to get a "glimpse of rodeo life" and show off their riding skills. Each participant was awarded a buckle, silver medal, book about rodeo, and a T-shirt.

Mustang Maddy and Donna Tolbert Donna Tolbert (Program director/lead instructor at Horsin' Around Therapeutic Riding Center) was selected to participate in the filming for one of Mustang Maddy's training sessions to be presented on a educational DVD! Pooh, one of the center's therapeutic riding horses was selected for the bareback and bride less riding exercise. Madison was able to teach her to stop and back without using any headgear and Haddie May (another therapeutic riding horse) was selected for the ground tying exercise due to her nervousness when being tied up and pawing of the ground non-stop. A square piece of plywood was placed in the middle of the round pen and she was only allowed to rest her front feet  when they were placed on the target. Donna stated, "The difference Madison made in these two horses in a few short hours was amazing! For such a young woman, she is truly an inspiration to the horse industry and a great resource for the therapeutic riding community. Ridgeway, CO was a beautiful setting and our host was nothing short of gracious!"
