Sweet Adelines Lake Ontario Region 16 Newsletter
August 2017
Submission Deadline for August Issue : September 17, 2017

Oh my... the summer has sure gone by quickly!  So sorry for the delay in getting the August issue to you and I must admit that the only excuse I really have is that the weather has been awesome over the past few weeks  :)

Now that we're all getting back to regular rehearsals here is a reminder about the types of submissions we welcome for the newsletter.

  • Membership drive success stories (We LOVE to hear these!)
  • Fun events your chorus has participated in
  • Great news and announcements
  • Show / performance details
  • Anything that your chorus would like to brag about :)

Here are a few guidelines to follow when submitting your articles:

  • Keep your submissions to approximately 500 words. We all have a lot of great news to share and I encourage you to submit monthly so articles could be kept to a reasonable length.
  • Send your articles either in a Word document, or in the body of an email. Please do not send as a PDF
  • Send your articles to sheighwayreg16@live.ca

If you have any questions, please let me know!

NOT IN THE DCP PROGRAM?

The program is not just for front-line directors!  Any member of Sweet Adelines can become an Approved Director and this program is an excellent way to learn about the many aspects of the Sweet Adeline organization, as well as to hone your listening, leadership and music theory skills.  Just think of how strong your chorus could be with several certified directors in your ranks!

ALREADY IN THE DCP PROGRAM?
DCP testing will be available at Fall Music School, so plan ahead and be ready to take a test or two.  Additionally, did you know we can arrange a test-taking opportunity for you at other times than at Regional events?  Contact our DCP Coordinator, Doris Waite or Director's Coordinator, Sonne Durphy about proctoring arrangements.

Barrie Soundwaves
Time flies when you're having fun!  Hard to believe we are half-way through the summer.  Seems like we just got home from contest and had our installation dinner, yet here we are in August already and we have lots of wonderful news to share!  We are excited and proud to announce we have a new name, Barrie Soundwaves Chorus.  Same great chorus, fresh new look for our future.  We welcomed four new members into our singing family in the spring and we are delighted to have one member returning to the fold.

What does any good Sweet Adeline do next?  Have Christmas in July, of course!   We have been brushing up on the old Christmas classics and learning some new Christmas favourites for our upcoming show in December.  Stay tuned for more details to come.

Here we GROW again!  Our unstoppable Director, Selina, is taking some time off to welcome a new bundle of joy.  We are in great hands, though, thanks to our capable Assistant Directors Mary and Wanda and our dedicated Section Leaders Heather, Heather, Mary and Gayle.  Thanks, ladies!

P icture Perfect!  We had a great time at our summer send-off party.  Thanks to the creative minds in our chorus, we got some cool candids of our members before we head off for our summer break.

We wish a happy, healthy summer's end to all our Sweet Adeline sisters!
See you in September!

Scarborough Chorus
Scarbrough Chorus has just returned from a much deserved 3 week break and has already begun welcoming new members to our chorus family. We are looking forward to our membership drive night on September 6th, and the possibility of growing this dynamic group even further!

Diane Clare directs Can You Feel The Love with East End Barbershoppers and Scarborough Chorus
In addition to our community performances, we put on quite the showstopper  when we combined our Sweet Adelines voices with East York Barbershoppers, for our 'Ads and Lads' spring concert on June 24th.

It was a day filled with friendship and harmony, and so many cookies!  'On the EDJJ', a mixed quartet comprised of a husband and wife and mother son from both choruses, wowed us with their tight harmonies and energetic performance.

We were thrilled to have the 2017 Ontario District Champions of the BHS, 'Yonge Guns Quartet', perform for our mesmerized audience.  There was truly no question as to why they were the champions!

Scarborough Chorus ended its short break with a guest performance at the Emancipation Day celebration in Toronto.  The event was attended by Toronto Mayor John Tory, Granville Anderson (MPP), Andrea Horwath (Leader of NDP), the Honourable Jean Augustine, and Ted Arnott (MPP), among many other speakers and performers.  We were humbled and honoured to be part of this important day of recognition.

We have a busy term ahead of us, with many rehearsals, retreats and special treats! Come check us out at our holiday show, 'Tis The Season, on December 9th, 2017. We promise you an evening of beautiful music and more baked goods than you can carry to your car!! (Don't worry, we will gladly help!)

Save the Dates for these two awesome North Metro Events!

On the evening of Friday, February 16th, 2018, North Metro Chorus will host its first A Cappella Challenge for Youth under 30. It will be open to coed. youth choral groups, not soloists or groups who are already fully members of Sweet Adelines. We are inviting you to save the date to join us. The A Cappella Challenge will take place at the Richmond Hill Centre for Performing Arts.

This initiative is part of our outreach to inspire youth in the craft of a cappella music and expose the local music education
community to our chorus and our amazing organization. For those of you who watch The Sing Off, the Voice, America's Got Talent, or more local events such as Show Choir Canada, it is clear that our youth possess phenomenal talent. This is another avenue for them to share that talent and develop a relationship with our organization.
