Summer Quarterly News Update | | |
|
Goodbye, summer! This is not a statement of excitement, but more of a declaration of amazement. Where did the summer go? I was pretty busy traveling the past few months, living out of a suitcase, cruising down I-70, or jetting through the skies. Traveling is fun, but as many of you know, it can be exhausting. Some of my summer highlights include the Region III Conference in Springfield, Missouri (if you missed it, we had a great time!), the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference, attending the ACTE board meeting in Alexandria,Virginia, and attending the Missouri ACTE conference. Each of these trips was filled with interactions with my career and technical education (CTE) colleagues from across the country. That never gets old!
But, I have to admit, I was ready for the start of the school year and a return to regular routines. As I am sure you can relate, these past few weeks have been a blur! It is easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle of the new school year, so I hope the long Labor Day weekend was a nice treat and you had a chance to relax.
On another note, please mark your calendar now for our Region III Conference on June 12–14, 2024 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Your fellow colleagues from Indiana are working hard to plan a great professional learning experience for you, so seriously, pick up your pen, or move your cursor to the open browser tab with your calendar, and get it scheduled! You won’t regret it.

| | Indiana — Indiana is gearing up for two key events for CTE professionals. On Sept. 21 for the new/newer teacher conference, and Sept. 22–23 for their annual Indiana ACTE conference. This year's keynote speaker is the voice of the Indianapolis Indians, Howard Kellman. Many diverse and informative sessions have been planned for all! The Legislative Committee is gearing up for the next legislative session with hopes of working closely with key legislators. Our new membership chairperson, Danny Camden, is working on a new membership drive, and our professional development (PD) coordinator, Shelley Rust, is consistently updating our website with new and diverse PD opportunities. Indiana ACTE will also open up the nomination process for new board positions opening up for next year. Indiana is also working on the next Region III conference to be held in Indianapolis at the Downtown Crown Plaza Hotel on June 12–14, 2024. This hotel is a historic landmark in Indiana that is steeped in traditions, secrets, and remnants of the past. The conference will be an energizing and informative conference for everyone, in every CTE position. The program will feature sessions for administrators, counselors, and teachers with a dynamic keynote speaker. Stay tuned for more information!

| | Iowa – Gearing up for high-quality professional development is the focus in Iowa. CTE professionals will be gathering for the Iowa ACTE 2023 Best Practices Conference on Sept. 19 at the FFA Enrichment Center in Ankeny. The focus of this event is the sharing of best practices in CTE or sharing important CTE information. Keynote speaker, Katie Becker from JLG Architects, asks future participants, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” While at one time this was a simple question, today, it’s a complicated query with a quickly growing list of answers. In fact, Becker thinks it’s the wrong question altogether. We don’t know what careers will exist in the future and there isn’t a roadmap of educational pathways to help learners and teachers predict the future. What we do know is that education is undergoing a compelling transformation. In today’s quickly evolving and technology-driven environment, no one can predict the path of education, but CTE shows us a vision that shouldn’t be ignored. Ready to head to Iowa to hear the rest?

| | Missouri – Missouri ACTE held its annual summer conference at the end of July. Over 1,000 CTE educators converged in Springfield, MO for the 3-day event. The opening meetings kicked off with keynote speaker Todd Whitaker. Todd left participants ready and excited for the new school year. The rest of Tuesday was spent in joint learning sessions attended by all of the different divisions. The highlight of Tuesday was the Missouri ACTE awards reception at the end of the day. Each division had an amazing slate of learning experiences during the next two days with sessions for teachers, administrators, administrative professionals, and even non-CTE educators. As always, the state hosted a well-attended expo center with presentations from a wide variety of vendors. Missouri educators are looking forward to the cooler weather in the state, but a warm December trip to Phoenix, Arizona, for the 2023 CareerTech VISION! State leaders are also working on plans for the annual MOACTE Legislative Day in February.
