Engagement, excitement, kindness, friendship, and collaboration. Throughout the Region V conference in Rapid City, South Dakota, I saw people fully engaged in learning, excited about learning together, kindness and engaging with new friends, and collaborating on developing best practices for CTE programs across Region V. As Scott Adams says, “… there’s no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end.” Our South Dakota conference team showed their grace and kindness throughout the conference. I am so grateful for their dedication, work, and willingness to take on the challenge of offering an in-person Region V conference.
I want to send a personal, heartfelt thank you to the South Dakota conference planning team: Bonita, Dodie, Coleen, Annika, Tracy, Mark, Ron, Deb, and Tere. From the sessions to the tours, to the incredible experience at Crazy Horse experience, everything was well-laid out and planned to ensure something for everyone.

During Covid, Kellie wanted to ensure that students still connected with industry professionals, so she setup various online informational interviews for students and developed a website to support online career exploration.

Geary designs his curriculum to have a meaningful, useful, and real impact on society. In his Entrepreneurship class, Geary runs a ‘Shark Tank’ style presentation allowing students to pitch ideas and get feedback for improvement.

Eric facilitates emerging curricular areas and accessed state-of-the-art industries as sources of professional development. He is innovative in collaborating with UNL’s College of Engineering as a training site for Project Lead the Way.

Congratulations to Dr. Dawn Mallette, from Colorado, for earning the ACTE Region V Teacher Educator of the Year Award. Dr. Mallette now moves on to the ACTE Excellence Awards, representing Region V.
Dr. Mallette developed a Design Academy, three mini courses, offering graduate level credit to those instructors that are currently working in education. The mini courses cover instructional strategies and implementation for Interior Design, Fashion Design, and Merchandising.

Congratulations to Cindy Arnold, from Washington, for winning the ACTE Region V Administrator of the Year award. Cindy will now represent Region V at the ACTE Excellence Awards.
Cindy believes that students need to engage in career exploration at young ages and need the opportunity to develop their interests. To support students at younger ages, the CTE program set up a Fourth Grade Career Fair where all seven primary schools bus their students for a full day of learning and exploring various careers.

Tony wants to ensure that students know they are part of something bigger and that education happens outside of school walls. Students engage in service learning projects that positively impact the community, begin in the classroom, but happen in the classroom.

Congratulations to Dan Rood Jr., from North Dakota, for earning the ACTE Region V Lifetime Achievement Award. Dan now moves forward to the ACTE Excellence Awards in Las Vegas.
Ginny Buck, the SRCTC Board Chair, noted that Dan Rood is a very resourceful administrator at find grants, effectively allocating Carl Perkins funds, and supporting member schools’ to best serve students. The state-of-the-art facilities ensure that students are able to get to work and prepare for their future.

Congratulations to Tim Knue, from Washington state for his nomination and award as the 2022 Region V Hall of Fame award recipient. Tim began as an agriculture instructor and also worked as an interim CTE director. When he retired from teaching, he became the executive director of Washington ACTE, where he has been for more than a decade now. He is a strong supporter, advocate, and cheerleader for all things CTE. Tim is very knowledgeable about the legislative process and for the past few years has been the legislative committee chair for Region V. | | |

Region V Conference: A World of Opportunities
SAVE THE DATE: April 12 – 15, 2023 in Fargo, North Dakota
The North Dakota conference planning team is excited to host the 2023 Region V Conference in Fargo, North Dakota from April 12-15th. Check out the video the North Dakota team put together: https://youtu.be/HYcnMtbJtaE.
Also, a reminder to anyone who has not been to a Region V conference before, there is a 1st Timers Scholarship you can apply for that supports attendance for 2 years, so you could apply by the due date for the conference this coming year in Fargo and if awarded, have support for both the Fargo conference and the next conference in Honolulu. The total scholarship is $500, $250 for the first year and $250 for the second year’s attendance.

Nominating Committee
As two of our policy committee members move off the committee, we need two Region V members to apply to be on the policy committee. Anyone from the following states may apply to be on the policy committee. According to our bylaws, Alaska, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Wyoming Region V members are allowed to apply to the nominating committee to become policy committee members.
We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Valerie Vuivich, for representing Region V at the national level on the national bylaws committee. Her term is now up and we need someone to apply to be the new bylaws committee representative from Region V. If you have an interest in bylaws, please submit an application to the nomination committee.

ACTE’s support fund promotes career and technical education nationwide. The fund is designed to generate positive awareness, increase member and public engagement, and expand the reach of CTE for all students. Your donation supports, the following types of outreach: annual twitter chat during CTE month with the National Career and Technical Student Organizations, guest blogs with partner organizations, interviews with Education Talk Radio, and development of written content that supports career and technical education.

NextLevel Postsecondary CTE Leadership Program
The Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) is excited to announce its fourth class of Fellows for its 2022 NextLevel Postsecondary CTE Leadership Program, sponsored by ECMC Foundation and powered by ACTE (formerly known as the Postsecondary Leadership Success Program at ACTE – sponsored by ECMC Foundation). Seventeen fellows were selected for the 2022-2023 cohort. The NextLevel Fellowship provides professional and career growth opportunities to the next generation of leaders in postsecondary CTE programs through this nationally-recognized program that is engaging, individualized, and memorable.

Opportunity Fund Grants
Congratulations to this year's Region V recipients of an Opportunity Fund Grant!
Region V Opportunity Fund Grant recipients for 2022-2023 are: Alaska, Utah, and Montana! We were all very thrilled to be conferencing in-person this year and to be able to listen to the 21-22’ Region V grant recipient reports; and also, hear the announcement of the new 22-23’ recipients. While there was a momentary sense of jittery excitement for our return to in-person, and conference delirium gained from the jam packed and amazing South Dakota hospitality; it seemed your Opportunity Fund Grant Chair was not able to read her own notes! Please, be assured that the recipients of Alaska, Utah, and Montana are in fact the awarded recipients!
The new recipient state organizations submitted detailed plans to use their requested funds for advocacy, growth, collaborative resources, CTSO student involvement, and legislative support for CTE. After a year of planning and development, Alaska will launch their Alaska ACTE Clearinghouse & CTE Resources on-line/web-based collaborative space. Alaska was awarded $2000 towards that effort and they will contribute matching funds. Utah ACTE is furthering an advocacy program to make the connection between CTSOs and other professional organizations through a “Day on the Hill” program. This is a continuation of this exciting effort that was disrupted due to COVID mitigations and not being able to visit their capital in-person. Utah was awarded $1600 and they will contribute matching funds. Montana is on a mission to increase their membership by creating “Welcome to CTE Boxes” that will be mailed to each new CTE educator in August of 2022, and additionally there will be follow-up support offered for those new to CTE in Montana. Montana was awarded $1740 and they will contribute matching funds. We look forward to hearing reports from each of these states at the 2023 Region V in Fargo, North Dakota.
The goal of the Opportunity Fund Grant is to support states with new and innovative ideas that go beyond their normal operating procedures and events; and, which are designed to benefit all the members of state associations.
