Happy Spring, Region V Members!

It’s hard to believe that the 2022–23 school year is almost over! It’s been a crazy, eventful and wonderful year so far, and I appreciate getting the chance to engage with you this year. The Region V Leadership Conference in Fargo, North Dakota, was one for the record books! What a wonderful conference, full of connections, friendships (new and continuing), learning, and plenty of laughs. As one of our speakers mentioned, community is critical to success, and we have a fantastic Region V community! Thank you to each of our Region V community members for your dedication to our students.

Your Region V policy committee is working hard to support our members and will continue to find ways to give back to our membership. If you have ideas on ways we can support our membership, please us know!

2023 Region V Important Dates:

Your Region V policy committee members have been hard at work preparing several opportunities for us to meet and collaborate with Region V members. Check out this calendar of events and opportunities to engage and connect with one another, both virtually and in person! As opportunities are added, we will continue to update this document and share with you! Region V Calendar. This calendar includes hot links to a variety of helpful tools and materials for you. Region V Leadership Conference

Attention First Time Region V Leadership Conference Attendees:

If the 2024 conference in Honolulu, Hawaii, will be the first time you’ve attended a Region V Conference, be sure to apply for one of the stipends that are available. Up to 10 $900 stipends will be awarded for the 2024 Conference in Hawaii and the 2025 Conference in Las Vegas. The stipend will be paid over two years with $450 paid upon attending each conference. Awards will be made at the conference. Applications can be found here, on the Region V website or contact Dodie Bemis (bemisd@lakeareatech.edu). Deadline for submission is March 1, 2024. We will notify you by March 10 if you are receiving the stipend.

2024 Region V Conference

2025 Region V Conference

Join the Legislative Huddles

Tim Knue, our Region V Legislative Liaison, has exciting news! We will be offering to Region V members, an opportunity to engage together via Zoom every other month to learn, “How Best to Stay Off the Menu and Be at the Table.” Engage together to understand the tools and process to best advocate and promote CTE in your school, community, state, and nation by engaging and sharing what is happening around Region V.

The legislative huddle Zoom sessions are an opportunity for ACTE Region V members to engage in discussions related to all things legislation and advocacy. The dates for the huddles are typically the first Monday of the month. The next huddle is scheduled for Monday, May 1 at 4:00 p.m. PST.

Region V Excellence Awards

On Friday, April 14, 2023, 45 state award winners from Region V states and the island of Guam vied for the title of ACTE Region V Excellence Award winner. These awards recognize members for their contributions to career and technical education. The following people were chosen as award recipients for 2023.

McKayla Gonder Plewe was presented with the ACTE Region V New Teacher of the Year award. This award recognizes teachers who have made a significant contribution toward innovative CTE programs and have shown accomplishments early in his/her professional career. McKayla is a Secondary Agricultural Educator for Cedar High School in Iron County School District in Cedar City, Utah.

Justin Brereton was presented the ACTE Region V Post-Secondary Teacher of the Year award. This award recognizes the accomplishments and innovations contributed to the CTE community by a postsecondary teacher/educator. Justin is a professor of Agribusiness at Yavapai College in Chino Valley, Arizona.

Lisa Krumwiede was presented the ACTE Region V Teacher Educator of the Year award. This award recognizes teacher educators who have demonstrated innovation in teacher education, leadership in improving CTE, and commitment to preparing teachers to deliver high quality CTE programs. Lisa is an Assistant Professor at Valley City State University in Valley City, North Dakota.

Jason T. Goble was presented the ACTE Region V Teacher of the Year award. This award recognizes teachers who have provided outstanding CTE programs in their respective fields and communities. Jason is an Agriculture teacher for Sevier School District in Salina, Utah.

Rod Belnap was presented the ACTE Region V Administrator of the Year award. This award recognizes an administrator who has made significant contributions to CTE programs in their communities and/or state. Rod is the CTE Director for Weber School District in Hooper, Utah.

Kip Hansen was presented the ACTE Region V Carl Perkins Community Service Award. This award recognizes a CTE professional who has made significant accomplishments and demonstrated leadership in programs and activities that promote community service. Kip is an Agriculture Educator for Sevier School District in Monroe, Utah.

Kristina Guy was presented the ACTE Region V Career Guidance Award. This award recognizes a school counselor or career development professional who has made significant contributions to CTE programs in his/her communities and/or state. Kristina is a Campus Counselor at Western Maricopa Education Center in Surprise, Arizona.

Jan Jardine was presented the ACTE Region V Lifetime Achievement Award. This award recognizes contributions and distinguished accomplishments of individuals who have been identified with the work and vision of the Association for Career and Technical Education. Jan is District WBL Coordinator & Provo CAPS Director at Provo City School District in Provo, Utah.

The ACTE Region V Excellence Award winners advance to the national level where they compete against the other four Regions at CareerTech Vision 2023 to be named the ACTE Excellence Award winner of the year. CareerTech Vision 2023 will be held Nov. 29–Dec, 2, 2023 in Phoenix, Arizona.

Region V Innovative Program Awards

Congratulations to our Region V Innovative Program Award Winners! The innovative program awards recognize outstanding programs across all of our Region V states and territories.

The Innovative Program Awards recognize innovative career and technical education programs from each Region V state that are unique, novel, and are serving to improve and promote the image of career and technical education. Receiving Innovative Program Awards this year were:

ACTE Region V Leadership-Fellowship Program

The purpose of the Region V Fellowship Program is to establish a leadership development program for CTE Educators in ACTE Region V and assist individuals in further developing their leadership skills in CTE and their involvement in professional associations, provide an opportunity for CTE Educators to become familiar with and participate in the processes used by policy makers in the development and implementation of laws, regulations, and other public policies at the local, state, and federal levels, and identify, train, and motivate a cadre of leaders who will continue to position ACTE as a leader in developing an educated, prepared, adaptable, and competitive workforce.

The Region V Fellowship Program is a two-year commitment, including leadership development, public policy learning, and professional development. Candidates are expected to participate in the National Policy Seminar, ACTE Vision, and the ACTE Region V conference, as well as engage in monthly conference calls.

ACTE’s support fund promotes career and technical education nationwide. The fund is designed to generate positive awareness, increase member and public engagement, and expand the reach of CTE for all students. Your donation supports, the following types of outreach: annual twitter chat during CTE month with the National Career and Technical Student Organizations, guest blogs with partner organizations, interviews with Education Talk Radio, and development of written content that supports career and technical education.

Policy Committee Openings

The terms of Jenn Fisk (NV) and Tracy Kern (SD) on the Region V Policy Committee will expire June 30, 2023. Here’s your opportunity to become involved in a leadership role. It’s a three-year term, beginning July 1, 2023. The expectation is to participate in monthly conference calls and attend VISION and the Region V Leadership Conference. In order to have broader representation among the Region V states, individuals from AK, AZ, ND, and HI may not apply this cycle, as these states are already represented by the current Policy Committee members.

Super Early Bird Registration for VISION Now Open!

ACTE’s CareerTech VISION is the must-attend event for career and technical education (CTE) professionals. Happening Nov. 29–Dec. 2 in Phoenix, Arizona, VISION offers comprehensive programming covering high-quality CTE in secondary and postsecondary environments and emerging trends in the field to help career and technical educators thrive in their careers. VISION provides attendees with a rich array of networking opportunities, an Expo, hundreds of concurrent program sessions, and numerous networking opportunities. Student Trophy Design Contest

Encourage your students to participate in ACTE’s annual student trophy design contest to redesign the 3D-printed trophies presented to the national ACTE award winners at the 2023 ACTE Awards Gala, happening Nov. 29 in Phoenix, Arizona. The winning team will receive a $1,000 scholarship, a free one-year lease of a 3D printer for the winner’s school, courtesy of Stratasys, and more! The deadline for design submissions is May 1.

ACTE Impact Awards

The ACTE Impact Awards recognize groups and individuals from the education, business and industry communities who contribute to the improvement and promotion CTE. The deadline to apply for the two Impact awards, the Business-Education Partnership Award and the Champion for CTE Award, is June 30.

$2,500 in Scholarship Money

Encourage students and adult learners, ages 18–35, to apply for the Horatio Alger Association Career and Technical Education Scholarship. They could earn up to $2,500 to pursue CTE.
