It’s hard to believe that some are already starting the new school year and others are now gearing up in preparation for fall start. Being your Region V vice president, this past year was an incredible experience, full of new learning for me and so many opportunities to meet Region V members. I would love to hear from you, what are some highlights in your CTE programs and what are some challenges you are facing that perhaps we provide support systems for you.
One of my favorite podcasts to listen to is called the Bright Morning Podcast, from Elena Aguilar and one of her podcasts in the series Starting Strong: The Power of Vision, she says, “you can really control, or have tremendous influence over, what kind of year you have by starting with envisioning what you want it to be.” Elena challenges us to think about the challenges and bright spots we faced last year and reflect on those experiences. @bright_morning_team, shared a series of questions to help you take your reflections from last year to consider as you prepare for the new school year, including who do you want to be this year, who do you need to be for the people you’re serving, what do you need to believe in order to be that person, and what do you want to do in order to be that person? These help you to begin developing your vision of the new year, thinking about who you have been and who you want to become (Elena Aguilar, Podcast, Starting Strong: The Power of Vision).
This goes hand in hand with a recent training I attended on Neural education (neuraleducation.org), where the focus is on developing new myelinated pathways that increase your serotonin, dopamine, and more positive connections that also help build hopefulness and resiliency. It was a long week of learning, but so eye-opening. I’ve learned so much more about how the brain works and brain resiliency. Those practices that Elena talks about in terms of reflecting where we have been and visioning where we want to be helps us develop new myelinated pathways and supports improved teaching.
One book recommended at the Neural education training, is called, Super Better, the Power of Living Gamefully, by Jane McGonicgal. While I am merely in chapter three right now, I already feel like I am more energized and hopeful about life. Suddenly, I feel like I am coming out of a deep fog and feel a renewed hopefulness and excitement for the future. 2023 Region V Conference: A World of Opportunities
SAVE THE DATE: April 12–15, 2023 in Fargo, North Dakota
The North Dakota conference planning team is excited to host the 2023 Region V Conference in Fargo, North Dakota, from April 12–15. Check out the video the North Dakota team put together.
Also, a reminder to anyone who has not been to a Region V conference before: There is a First Timers Scholarship you can apply for that supports attendance for two years, so you could apply by the due date for the conference this coming year in Fargo and if awarded, have support for both the Fargo conference and the next conference in Honolulu. The total scholarship is $500, $250 for the first year and $250 for the second year’s attendance.

ACTE’s support fund promotes career and technical education (CTE) nationwide. The fund is designed to generate positive awareness, increase member and public engagement, and expand the reach of CTE for all students. Your donation supports the following types of outreach: annual twitter chat during CTE month with the National Career and Technical Student Organizations, guest blogs with partner organizations, interviews with Education Talk Radio, and development of written content that supports career and technical education. Join postsecondary CTE professionals from across the nation this Oct. 6–7 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to address expanding career pathways, building apprenticeships, closing access and equity gaps, and supporting faculty recruitment and retention. The convening will feature expert panel presentations, engaging professional development sessions, and numerous networking sessions.

ACTE Welcomes Iowa ACTE
ACTE is pleased to announce that the Iowa Association for Career and Technical Education (Iowa ACTE) has formally unified with the national Association. Spearheaded by the Iowa ACTE Board of Directors and Iowa ACTE Executive Director Sandy Miller, the state association is now officially unified with the national body.

Introducing ACTE’s New Work-Based Learning Division
The new Work-based Learning Division provides ACTE members with valuable resources and opportunities for professional development, leadership and networking as we help students build awareness of potential careers, explore career opportunities and prepare for their future. This new Division includes a diverse group of professionals including work-based learning and apprenticeship coordinators, K–12 and postsecondary educators, business and community partners, program administrators, and state workforce representatives. ACTE members have the opportunity to choose from among 11 Divisions in ACTE and join a community of professionals with shared CTE interests.

Nevada ACTE Membership
The executive board was gratified to see so many members at the Annual Summer Conference in Lake Tahoe! We take the feedback we received seriously and are always striving to improve the professional learning experience for our members.
As part of our continuous improvement, the executive board has determined a priority need aligned with furthering the goal of the Association to support the membership as Nevada ACTE grows. Therefore, we have initiated a search for an executive director. Applications for the position will be accepted from Aug. 1–15. Please review the position description and details.
