It was wonderful to get the opportunity to see many of you in Vegas at the ACTE VISION conference! While virtual conferences are definitely convenient for many reasons, there is truly nothing better than getting to be together and connect with one another in person. Dr. Brene Brown said, “I define connection as the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued; when they can give and receive without judgment, and when they derive sustenance and strength from relationship.” It is through connection in person, and virtually, that we continue to lean into developing the best career and technical education (CTE) programs that support our students growth and preparedness for their futures.
When we collaborate together, we create synergy, that concept that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, or 1+1=5. Attending conferences, such as the upcoming ACTE Region V Conference in Fargo, North Dakota, (April 12-15) provides dedicated time to network, to learn, and to create synergy to bring back to your local CTE programs.

2023 Region V Conference: A World of Opportunities | |

Discover a World of Opportunities at the ACTE Region V Meeting in Fargo, North Dakota, from April 12-15. Whether you are a first-timer or a seasoned veteran, you will find something new at this conference. A few highlights of the conference include a presentation from motivational speaker, Alex Kajitani, and an evening tour and meal at the Fargo Air Museum. Thursday's afternoon (April 13) events will include various business and industry tours that are in and around the Fargo, North Dakota, area.

Attention First Time Region V Leadership Conference Attendees
If the 2023 conference in Fargo, North Dakota, will be the first time you’ve attended a Region V Conference, be sure to apply for one of the stipends that are available. Up to ten $500 stipends will be awarded for the 2023 Conference in North Dakota and the 2024 Conference in Hawaii. The stipend will be paid over two years with $250 paid upon attending each conference. Awards will be made at the conference. Applications can be found here, on the Region V website or contact Dodie Bemis.
Deadline for submission is March 1. We will notify you by March 10 if you are receiving the stipend.

Region V Excellence Awards
Your Region V awards committee is working on developing an incredible awards celebration for state award winners moving on the ACTE Region V awards. For state award winners moving forward to the ACTE Region V level, it is time to get your application completed in the ACTE Awards Portal and complete your video. The awards process for Region V has two parts: (1) verify candidate information is accurate and up-to-date in the ACTE Awards Portal and (2) complete an UNEDITED interview video based on the guidelines developed by the Region V Awards committee.

The communication awards recognize the highest-quality materials used by ACTE Region V State Associations. State associations can submit for the following categories:

Newsletter: published at least three times per year and is a news-related document written for an intended audience

Membership Recruitment: has one specific purpose to promote membership

Conference Program: has one specific purpose to promote a meeting

Advocacy Publication: purpose is to promote ACTE and the goals of the state and national association

Website: purpose is to promote CTE utilizing technology

Region V Innovative Program Awards
Did you know that EVERY state and territory in Region V can submit for the innovative awards? There are so many unique, innovative, and creative CTE programs across Region V, and we want to recognize YOURS! Each state association may submit one nomination annually, make sure to submit your nomination by the March 1 deadline.
All Innovation Program Award submissions qualify for the award, so long as they meet the following criteria:
- Program demonstrates a capacity to prepare graduates to perform successfully in an occupational field
- Program should exemplify the highest standards within its occupational field
- Staff must be involved in an in-service program to keep abreast of technological changes in their occupational field
- Program must have been in operation for at least three years
- Instructor(s) in the program must have been a member of the state association for at least three consecutive years

Hall of Fame Awards
The Hall of Fame Awards recognize the contributions and distinguished accomplishments of those individuals who have been identified with the work and purposes of Region V. This award is presented to ACTE Region V members who have made a significant impact on the field of CTE, specifically at the Region V level, along with state and national levels.
Nominees are evaluated on the following criteria:
- Impact of contributions on student achievement, curriculum, community, and CTE programs
- Significant contributions at the Region V, national and state levels
- Contributions or prominence achieved above and beyond job assignments

ACTE Announces Washington Agriculture Education Instructor as 2023 National Award Winner
The Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) announced Sammi Jo Sims, Agriculture Education Instructor at Ellensburg School District 401 in Ellensburg, Washington as the 2023 National ACTE New Teacher of the Year. This award recognizes new CTE teachers who have made significant contributions toward innovative and unique career and technical education programs and shown a professional commitment early in their careers. The New Teacher of the Year Award is sponsored by Goodheart-Willcox.
Sammi Jo Sims is an Agriculture Education Instructor and FFA Advisor at Ellensburg High School, located in Ellensburg, WA. She is in her sixth year of teaching and is very passionate about Career and Technical Education and the opportunities it provides to students. She was very involved in CTE at her high school and took classes through Ag Ed, Health, Business and Tech Ed. She served as a past Washington State FFA Officer before going on to earn her AAAS-Agricultural Sciences Degree from Walla Walla Community College, B.S., Agricultural Education from the University of Idaho, and M.S. Curriculum and Instruction from Western Governors University. She enjoys being able to bring both her education and field experiences into the classroom to provide students with meaningful connections and experiences. Sammi Jo lives in Ellensburg with her husband, three children and many farm critters.

Sims was one of five finalists for the 2023 national title. The national winner was announced at the Awards Gala, recognizing the best CTE educators in the country. The event took place on November 30, at ACTE’s CareerTech VISION 2022. The Awards Gala was sponsored by Express Employment Professionals, CareerSafe, Goodheart-Willcox, and Stratasys. ACTE Region V Leadership-Fellowship Program | |

The purpose of the Region V Fellowship Program is to establish a leadership development program for CTE educators in ACTE Region V and assist individuals in further developing their leadership skills in CTE and their involvement in professional associations; provide an opportunity for CTE educators to become familiar with and participate in the processes used by policy makers in the development and implementation of laws, regulations, and other public policies at the local, state, and federal levels; and identify, train, and motivate a cadre of leaders who will continue to position ACTE as a leader in developing an educated, prepared, adaptable, and competitive workforce.
The Region V Fellowship Program is a two-year commitment, including leadership development, public policy learning, and professional development. Candidates are expected to participate in the National Policy Seminar, ACTE's CareerTech VISION, and the ACTE Region V Conference, as well as engage in monthly conference calls.

ACTE promotes high-quality CTE programs for diverse audiences. We continue to build an inclusive culture that encourages, supports, and celebrates the diversity of the CTE community. We are committed to inclusion, access, equity, and diversity throughout our organization. The IAED Mentorship Program was created with the goal to provide mentors to ACTE members interested in IAED, and to encourage ACTE members interested in IAED to pursue leadership roles in ACTE.

Now Hiring: IAED Manager
ACTE is looking for a part-time IAED manager to lead all facets of ACTE’s IAED programming, including ACTE’s IAED advisory group as well as seeking growth and development opportunities for new and related initiatives. The IAED manager will be tasked with increasing the number of resources and activities to support CTE professionals as they seek to address IAED issues within CTE programs and focusing on how to effectively integrate an IAED awareness and mindset throughout all ACTE’s programming.
