Transportation Policy Council Meeting: Sept. 23

At its meeting on Sept. 23, the Transportation Policy Council approved the Transportation Performance Measures targets for 2024 and 2026.

H-GAC is federally required to set performance targets concerning the safety, reliability, levels of congestion, transit asset management, and air quality of the 8-county Houston-Galveston metropolitan planning area’s transportation system. According to analyses by H-GAC staff, in coordination with subcommittees, the region achieved five of its seven performance measure targets in 2022. Based on the 2022 performance measures and public comments received during the public comment period earlier this summer, H-GAC has recommended future targets for 2024 and 2026, which were approved by the policy council. The future targets include new congestion reduction and multimodal travel targets for the Conroe-The Woodlands urban area.

Additionally, the policy council approved several new amendments to the 2023-2026 Transportation Improvement Program and the 2045 Regional Transportation Plan. It also approved an amendment to the Unified Planning Work Program that will allow for the installation of more bike and pedestrian counters in the region. Later, the policy council received updates on several transportation planning activities, including a grant opportunity under the Safe Streets and Roads for All program, future RTP and TIP amendments, and the selection process for the upcoming Call for Projects.

The next TPC meeting is scheduled to take place at 9:30 a.m., Friday, Oct. 28. The meeting agenda can be viewed online at www.h-gac.com/transportation-policy-council/meeting-agendas. To view or listen to the video recording of the latest TPC meeting, click here.

David Fink Joins TranStar, Harris County Sheriff's Office, and AAA Texas Representatives to Highlight Importance of 'Move Over, Slow Down' Law

David Fink, H-GAC transportation manager, joined with representatives from Houston TranStar, AAA Texas, and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office at a press event showcasing the importance of the Texas ‘Move Over, Slow Down’ Law. This law requires drivers to move over one lane or slow down to 20 mph below the posted speed limit when approaching emergency vehicles, law enforcement, tow trucks, utility service vehicles, Texas Department of Transportation vehicles, or other highway construction or maintenance vehicles using visual signals or flashing lights activated on the roadside.

Tow truck drivers representing the Gulf Coast Regional Tow and Go Program are among many emergency and roadside assistance vehicles that regularly assist motorists that find themselves stranded on our freeways. By obeying the ‘Move Over, Slow Down’ Law, drivers help protect these critical first responders, along with the stranded motorists they assist, from dangerous or even deadly crashes.

To learn more about the importance of the ‘Move Over, Slow Down’ Law, visit the TxDOT website. To learn more about Tow and Go and how to call for assistance if you find yourself stranded on the freeway due to mechanical failure or flat tire, visit towandgo.com

Don't Pay the Price! Practice Safe Driving Habits while Traversing Our Region's Roads

Traffic fatalities in Texas are trending in the wrong direction. Last year alone, more than 3,500 people lost their lives on Texas roads. You can protect yourself from becoming another statistic by adopting safe driving habits. Always drive at safe speeds, avoid distractions, never drive angry or under the influence, and be mindful and courteous when sharing the road with pedestrians, bicyclists, people with disabilities, and transit riders. By practicing these responsible habits, you can avoid paying the price.
