What's The Key Issue In This Year's Election?

Last week, I was invited to speak at a forum called by the City's Living Wage Advisory Committee.  The Committee was formed several years ago when the City passed its Living Wage Ordinance - requiring that most businesses that do contract work for the City of Santa Barbara pay a pre-determined "living wage", currently at around $16 per hour.

The purpose of the forum was to discuss the cost of living in Santa Barbara, and how we should address it.  In fact, that was the question we were asked to make prepared remarks on - "How would you define the problem of living costs in Santa Barbara and what is your most important path for making progress toward making this an inclusive community?"

As I was the first speaker, I decided to turn away from where several of the speakers would go - asking that employees simply be paid more (yes, more even than the now State-mandated $15 per hour minimum wage by 2023).  Instead, I focused squarely on housing.

November of 2017 will see a number of important local matters on our election ballots, not the least of which is the election of three City Council members and a new Mayor of Santa Barbara.

To help wade through all of the issues that are helping to drive this election, the Chamber has circulated questionnaires to all announced candidates.  Those candidates have responded back, and we've posted their responses, verbatim, on our website.  You can find those answers at the links below.

BUSINESS OF THE MONTH
The organizational assessment and consulting experts at Effectiveness Consultants, headquartered in Santa Barbara, Ca., recently announced plans to release a comprehensive behavioral assessment tool called the Interpersonal Dynamics Inventory. The firm has launched a website dedicated to the tool ahead of the release, which is slated for August 2017.

About The Interpersonal Dynamics Inventory
Originally developed in the late 1970s in Sweden (where it is still widely used), the Interpersonal Dynamics Inventory (IDI) is an organizational assessment tool that measures the innate aspects of an individual's behavior rather than his or her intent. The assessment's results allow individuals to gain more awareness about how their behaviors impact others as well as improve their ability to work with, lead and influence those in their professional circles...
