Help Spread the Word - Be Salt Wise!
Reduce your winter salt use to help protect our lakes, streams, and drinking water. 1 pound of salt fits in a 12 ounce cup and is enough to treat a 20-foot driveway or 10 sidewalk squares.

Deicers improve the winter safety of our streets, driveways, sidewalks, and parking lots. But when used improperly they can also be a major source of salt (sodium and chloride) to our lakes, rivers, streams, and groundwater.
According to
WI Salt Wise
, “Just 1 teaspoon of salt pollutes 5 gallons of water!” When the snow melts excess salt travels through storm sewers or other drainage systems making its way to our lakes, rivers, streams and groundwater. Regional trends show increasing salt concentrations in our local water bodies and drinking water supplies, primarily as a result of winter salt application. Once salt is in our water, it does not break down – it’s here to stay. Chloride from salt is toxic to small aquatic life and degrades the natural eco-system of our waterways."

Help protect our water resources
by spreading the word about proper salt use. To request some of the WI Salt Wise cups for distribution by your municipality, watershed group, neighborhood group, or other organization, contact Susan Sandford, Strategic Engagement Coordinator at the Dane County Land and Water Resources Department, at (608) 224-3617 or

The Capital Area Regional Planning Commission is one of the many regional partners working together as
WI Salt Wise
to help inform our community about proper salt use.

Is the Greater Madison Region's Population Poised to Take Off?
157,000 additional people would be approximately 2 Camp Randals worth of growth in the region.
A Greater Madison Vision
(AGMV) projects that Dane County’s population will increase by about 157,000 people between 2015 and 2050. With that increase, the county would house around 670,000 people.
Some signs, however, point to faster growth.
