Speaker: Mark Early

Research Scientist

Iowa State University,

Polymer & Food Protection Consortium

Mark Early is a pre-doctoral research scientist for the Polymer and Food Protection Consortium (PFPC) at Iowa State University in close coordination with students, staff, and industry partners under the supervision of Dr. Keith Vorst and Dr. Greg Curtzwiler. He provides support for ongoing projects with specific focus on PFAS chemicals, endocrine modulating chemicals, and recycled material odor performance. The PFAS chemical projects focus on targeted and non-targeted identification/quantification strategies for PFAS chemicals and strategy development for PFAS removal, sequestration, remediation, and destruction processes in food packaging materials. Endocrine modulating chemical projects focus on targeted and non-targeted extraction, identification, and quantitation of contaminants in plastics and food packaging materials. Electronic nose evaluation of PCR plastics is being developed for utility in evaluation of lot-to-lot source material evaluation at targeted stages of recycling processes for effective sortation and odor remediation treatments prior to consumer use. Additionally, he is working on commercially scaled re-sealable bio-adhesive trials for food packaging.

He earned a B.S. in Chemistry from California Polytechnic State University. He is completing his Ph.D. in Polymer Science & Engineering from the University of Southern Mississippi.
