LGBTQAI Allies:
Increasing Safety and Inclusivity for Youth
Tuesday December

|
|
Workshop Description:
According to a GLSEN School Climate Report (2013), 85% of LGBTQ(IA) youth felt harassed in the past year and 56% felt unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation (or gender identity). Youth should feel secure, and accepted when accessing our programs and services, and yet, we don’t always have the tools or the language to be a true ally to our LGBTQIA youth. Designed for youth workers at all levels, the LGBTQIA Ally Workshop is designed to support organizational change, increasing safety and understanding for youth and staff.
Join us and develop strategies to created inclusive and safe spaces for all youth to thrive!

RESPONDING, REFLECTING, & REPAIRING:
Learning From Conflict, Repairing Relationships, & Tools For Self-Management
Wednesday December
6
, 2017
|
|
Workshop Description:
In this workshop participants will explore conflicts as opportunities for young people and adults to learn from mistakes, reflect on experiences and repair relationships. Participants will learn to “pick battles” by identifying “big no’s” or unsafe behaviors that must be addressed in order to keep programs emotionally and physically safe. Ramapo’s tool for conflict resolution: W.O.W. (What’s Up/Own Up/ What Now) will be presented and practiced. Participants will identify best practices for implementing W.O.W. as a restorative protocol for responding not only to conflicts between young people but also in response to conflicts between young people and adults (especially in regards to youth not following community-wide expectations.) Finally, participants will learn to distinguish between consequences that teach skills and strengthen relationships and punitive responses that exclude young people and weaken relationships.
Objectives:
- Participants will focus on strategies for preventing conflicts by teaching and modeling tools for managing difficult emotions such as anger, frustration, and disappointment.
- Participants will learn to use calming techniques including meditation, relaxation exercises, movement breaks and sensory materials to help young people release, express and learn from emotions.
- Participants will also explore structures and routines, such as restorative circles, for allowing young people to express and make sense of difficult feelings.
Intended Audience:
Site Directors and Frontline Youth Development Staff
