Through generations of systemic racism, our nation has failed to protect and value Black children and families. Beyond learning about racism and the inequity that abounds in our communities, the issue of racial justice also requires action.

Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum and Dr. Allison Briscoe-Smith will focus on how we, as parents, can play an active role in building an anti-racist society and supporting a future where all children are valued. Parents will hear practical advice for talking about race and inspiring kids to fight for racial equity.

Beverly Daniel Tatum, PhD, President Emerita of Spelman College, is the author of the best-selling book, Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? And Other Conversations about Race, now in its 20th anniversary edition. A thought leader in higher education, she was the 2013 recipient of the Carnegie Academic Leadership Award and the 2014 recipient of the American Psychological Association Award for Outstanding Lifetime Contributions to Psychology.

Allison Briscoe-Smith, PhD, is the Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and a full-time faculty member at the Wright Institute in Berkeley. Her research has focused on trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and how children understand race. She is also a senior fellow at UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center, where she serves as one of the hosts of the center’s popular The Science of Happiness podcast.

Our Fall 2020 Common Ground Speaker Series events will take place live online. Please register for each event to receive webinar access, reminders and updates. Registration closes two hours before the start of each event.

Parents, faculty and staff at our 44 member schools attend the Common Ground online events free of charge. This is made possible through the generous financial support of their schools.
Faculty and educators from non-member schools are also invited to attend free of charge.
Guests from non-member schools and the general community are welcome to register and attend the virtual live stream events for a non-refundable fee.
