COFFEE Deep-Dive:

Virtual Learning Event on Field-tested Tools and Practices to Reduce Forced and Child Labor in

Brazil, Colombia and Mexico

Wednesday, February 7, 2024

10:30 AM - 12:00 PM (EST)

Simultaneous translation for this event will be provided in English, Spanish, and Portuguese

Verité research has documented an elevated risk of forced and child labor in the Latin American coffee sector. Discrimination, underpayment of wages, excessive hours of work, and health and safety violations have also been identified, not only in Latin America, but in coffee-producing countries around the world.

In this dynamic virtual learning event, hosted by Verité and the Cooperation on Fair Free Equitable Employment (COFFEE) Project, we will share knowledge and insights on using innovative, cost-effective approaches to identify, address, and prevent labor risks. Hear the perspectives of coffee traders, roasters, and smallholder producers and cooperatives in Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico on how they were able to harness these tools to improve labor practices and working conditions, including ethical recruitment practices and alternatives to piece-rate pay.

This event is tailored for companies and key stakeholders along the entire coffee supply chain, including Retailers, Roasters, Traders, Cooperatives, Medium & Large Farm, Smallholder Farmers & Small Cooperatives, auditors and monitors, and civil society organizations.

Agenda Highlights:

  • Panel Discussion with Project Partners in Key Origins: Gain insights from the invaluable perspectives of coffee roasters, traders, coffee cooperatives, and smallholder producers in Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico on testing innovative and cost-effective approaches to reducing and preventing labor risks.
