Modular Thinking
Presenter: Paul E. Kassabian, PE, Principal | Simpson Gumpertz & Heger
The increased development of modular construction requires us to improve our modular thinking and contend with new questions. When people that have not asked the right questions, or come up with the wrong answers, they’ve had to close their modular doors. 

The key questions are: What are we standardizing and what is variable? Is the object the module or should we be standardizing the interface? Is modularity only for physical items or can it be information-based in our industry? These are strategic questions that take place at all levels of scale, and getting them right can create new and exciting opportunities!
JUNE 17 Topic:
Modular Structural Systems on Both Coasts
Presenter: David Farnsworth, Principal, Tall Buildings Business Leader | ARUP 
This presentation will present the challenges and strategies employed to successfully deliver volumetric modular construction in a range of scenarios and environments. 

It will examine the impact of height, wind and seismic requirements on the design of a number of modular projects on the east and west coasts.  
JUNE 24 Topic:
Leading-edge Technologies in Modular
& Industrialized Construction
Presenter: Amr Raafat, VP of VDC & Technology | Windover Construction
This presentation will dive into leading-edge technologies that support modular and offsite construction. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of the latest modular and digital prefabrication process and how optimized BIM, laser scanning and drone mapping can support certainty of outcome and ensure project efficiencies, high quality execution and safety throughout construction.

Case studies will include multiple project types and applications to highlight how practical use of technology can support projects from preconstruction through completion and beyond.
Paul E. Kassabian, PE
Principal | Simpson Gumpertz & Heger

Paul Kassabian specializes in structural design and investigation on a wide range of structural systems, from buildings for architects to projects on the cutting edge of both structural systems and materials. He has worked on structural designs and investigations for numerous modular projects. He is also the practice leader of the SGH Digital Lab.  

Paul taught at Massachusetts Institute of Technology for 10 years and currently teaches and advises on structural design at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design.
David Farnsworth
Principal and Tall Buildings Business Leader | ARUP

David Farnsworth is a Principal with Arup’s New York Office and has a depth of experience in the design and management of projects both locally and globally. David leads Arup’s Americas Property Market and Tall Buildings Business with property and high rise design experience encompassing all program types, construction materials, and modern methods of tower construction.
He has designed some of the world’s most iconic tall building structures including the towers at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, Northeast Asia Trade tower in Incheon Korea, & the Citic Tower in Beijing. David has worked the past decade developing volumetric modular systems for high rise construction. His modular work includes the 32-story modular residential apartment tower at 461 Dean Street in Brooklyn, which was the tallest modular building in the world when completed, and he is currently working on a number of volumetric modular projects in California ranging in height from 6-15 stories.  
Amr Raafat
VP of VDC & Technology | Windover Construction

Amr Raafat is a leading expert in the construction industry’s most cutting-edge technologies that streamline projects procurement. He has more than 20 years of experience combining architectural, construction, and engineering expertise. In recognition of his pioneering work and vision in Construction Technologies, Amr received the prestigious 2019 Innovator of the Year award at the Autodesk AEC Excellence Awards. 
Amr leads Windover’s VDC team and the Innovations for Design, Engineering and Automation, IDEA™ platform providing 4D animations, MEP/BIM coordination, laser scanning, drone mapping, virtual and mixed reality, prefabrication, robotics, automation and 3D printing to enhance planning, risk mitigation, scheduling, site logistics, and safety throughout all construction phases. Amr earned his Master's in Architecture from Boston Architectural College in Boston, MA.
