Consisting of a 265-ft-tall, 17-story, 555,000 sq. ft. Class A commercial lab/office Tower, a 25,000 sq. ft. triangle-shaped public green space, an 85-ft span pedestrian bridge and an 10,000 sq. ft. public plaza level connecting all parcels and the World Center Avenue Bridge together, the 10 World Trade project is sited on Parcel A2 located adjacent to the MBTA World Trade Center Silver Line Station and the Boston Convention and Exhibit Center (BCEC) in Boston’s thriving Seaport District.

The project site is bounded by the existing MassDOT Turnpike tunnel and on/off ramp structure on the South and West, and the existing World Trade Center Avenue bridge on the East.

The existing MBTA Silver Line tunnel structure crosses the entire project site in the middle below grade, which brings unique engineering challenges to the Project.

A departure from conventional glass box buildings, the architectural design of the 10 World Trade Tower by Sasaki resulted in a unique form of the building, with an emphasis on the “push and pull” of the facades and corners that brings the base of the building inward and creates more generous public realm at the ground floor and plaza level at the base.

To assist the architect in achieving their design intention of a column-free ground floor and to also address the site restraints caused by the existing DOT and MBTA structures below and above grade, a unique arch-shaped transfer truss system was adopted on all four sides of the building, with spans between 140-feet to 190-feet and providing support for the slanted perimeter columns.

The presentation will discuss the unique structural challenges the design team met during design and construction. Lessons learned will be shared with the audience.
