Building Cohesive Teams for Early Intervention Assessments

Talks on Tuesdays are monthly webinars held at noon on the first Tuesday of each month, focusing on important topics that are relevant for EI practitioners. Guest speakers are chosen for each webinar to deliver content and answer questions.

DESCRIPTION:

During this webinar, participants will discuss a family-centered, early intervention assessment process while engaging in effective teaming and collaboration. Participants will understand the five dysfunctions of an assessment team, identify individual and team strengths, and develop norms to foster collaboration to improve children and family outcomes.

Kendall Lee, EdD

serves as the Director of the Infant and Toddler Connection (ITC) of the Heartland and HIPAA Compliance Officer at Longwood University in Farmville, VA. Dr. Lee is responsible for the oversight of the ITC; the area’s early intervention program serving clients birth to three with developmental delays and disabilities. His expertise includes ensuring that all providers, internal and/or external, are following all federal and state requirements and providing early intervention services. As the HIPAA Compliance Officer, Dr. Lee is responsible for Longwood´s HIPAA compliance program by monitoring HHS´ and the state´s regulatory requirements.

Bernita Sykes, MS

is a native of Portsmouth, Virginia, and has been a resident of Central Virginia since 2001. She has a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Psychology. Bernita is currently pursuing her PhD in Special Education at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). Her professional career began in the classroom as a middle school special education teacher. After teaching for the public school system, Bernita worked with adults with special needs in a Day Support program for Henrico Area Mental Health and Developmental Services (HAMHDS). After attending a training at HAMHDS, Bernita’s career interests shifted. While at the training, Bernita met the supervisor of the agency’s Early Intervention program. After hearing about the program’s goals and mission of providing services to infants and toddlers with developmental delays, Bernita felt that she finally found what she was destined to do in life. In 2005 she began working as a Service Coordinator for HAMHDS’ Early Intervention program and in 2008, she was promoted to be the Local System Manager for the Henrico Area. Bernita is also an adjunct professor at VCU.
