The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) continues to see dramatic statewide increases in cases of congenital syphilis (CS), a severe yet preventable condition when syphilis is passed from mother to fetus. This webinar, presented by the California Prevention Training Center, features Dr. Eric Tang, public health medical officer at CDPH, who will provide a clinical overview of CS prevention and discuss the new Expanded Syphilis Screening Recommendations from CDPH as it relates to family planning and primary care providers.  After his presentation, Dr. Sara Kennedy, Chief Medical Officer of Planned Parenthood Northern California, will present her organization’s experience implementing expanded syphilis screening in their clinics to detect and treat syphilis cases to ultimately prevent CS cases in California.

Meet Our Experts
Eric Tang, MD, MPH
Dr. Tang is part of the clinical faculty at the California Prevention Training Center and is a Public Health Medical Officer for the STD Control Branch at the California Department of Public Health. Dr. Tang received his medical degree at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and his Master of Public Health at the University of California - Berkeley. He is double-board certified in Internal Medicine and Preventive Medicine and completed his residency training at Kaiser San Francisco and University of California - San Francisco. He currently sees patients at City Clinic, the municipal STD clinic in San Francisco, and is a consultant on the STD Clinical Consultation Network.
Sara Kennedy, MD, MPH
Dr. Kennedy is an obstetrician and gynecologist who serves as Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at Planned Parenthood Northern California. As CMO, Dr. Kennedy spearheaded a California statewide initiative to expand STI screening among the seven California Planned Parenthood affiliates, in partnership with CDPH.  
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint providership of the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine and the California Prevention Training Center.
