The San Francisco Department of Public Health continues to see concerning rises in sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This half-day, virtual event will provide important updates in the field of sexual health to help providers strengthen the delivery of STI prevention and care. Hear from local experts on STI epidemiology in San Francisco, important recommendations to prevent congenital syphilis, updates from the 2021 CDC STI Treatment Guidelines, and a lively case panel.

Meet Our Experts

Stephanie Cohen, MD, MPH Dr. Stephanie Cohen is the STD Controller for San Francisco and the Medical Director of San Francisco City Clinic. She is an Assistant Professor at UCSF in the Division of Infectious Diseases and an HIV primary care provider. Her research focuses on using implementation science to guide the translation of STI and HIV prevention research into clinical and public health practice. She is currently site PI for a randomized controlled study of doxycycline PEP to prevent STIs. She is a passionate advocate for PrEP and loves to talk about syphilis.

Oliver Bacon, MD, MPH Dr. Oliver Bacon is Supervising Physician at San Francisco City Clinic. He is also an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at University of California San Francisco in the Division of HIV, Infectious Diseases, and Global Medicine. From 2015 to 2017 he led the RAPID initiative (immediate ART initiation for all persons newly diagnosed with HIV infection in San Francisco) for the Getting to Zero initiative and was Deputy Director of the Capacity Building Assistance Program for high impact HIV prevention at the SFDPH. His areas of interest include diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, antiretroviral therapy, management of opportunistic infections, new HIV testing strategies, early treatment of HIV infection, and biomedical prevention of HIV infection.

Ina Park, MD, MS Dr. Ina Park is a Professor at the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine, Medical Director at the California Prevention Training Center and a Medical Consultant for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-Division of STD Prevention.  Dr. Park was a co-author of the 2021 CDC STI Treatment Guidelines and a contributor to the first Federal STI Strategic Plan (2021-2025). She is also the author of Strange Bedfellows: Adventures in the Science, History, and Surprising Secrets of STDs. Her writing has also appeared in The New York Times and Scientific American.

Kelly Johnson, MD, MPH

Dr. Kelly Johnson is a fellow in Infectious Diseases and STIs at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), where she also completed an Internal Medicine residency and served as a Chief Fellow (2019-2020). She is board-certified in both Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases, works as an HIV primary care provider at Zuckerberg San Francisco Hospital, and provides sexual health services at San Francisco City Clinic. Her research interests include real-world implementation of HIV PrEP and the intersection between HIV and bacterial STIs.
